Route advice: Ravelston to Crewe Road South

Should be easy peasy but I'm having a mental block. I need to get from NEPN in Ravelston area to the young man's nursery on Kimmerghame View (just off Crewe Road South near the Western General) but I'm stuck because I'm not sure how to do it at rush hour with a (fairly heavy) trailer, and back again at rush hour too. I really don't want to spend much, if any, time on busy roads.

This isn't hugely helpful as I don't know the details exactly, but you may be able to work it out on a map. If you come off the NEPN at Craigleith (Sainsbury's) and go north on Groathill Ave then take a right to Craigleith Hill Ave, you can then take a left onto Craigleith Hill Green to get to the Western General. From there you could go through the Western General onto Crewe Road or cut through onto Telford Road. From Telford Road, beyond the Western, there's a way to work your way through to Grigor Avenue (I've only done it in the opposite direction on foot after a few glasses of wine), it's just getting there that's the problem. You'd either have to cross Telford Road or cycle on the pavement. It may be more of an option on the way back.

Stay on the NEPN instead of coming off it at ravelston, take the north west fork to drylaw park, come off the NEPN at Telford drive onto Telford road and then use the route through the hospital as described above.? Might work, not sure where kimmerghame view is exactly nor how the route through the hospital works? It is on the spokes map.

Doesn't the sneak- through to the Western involve an undropped kerb at some point?

Also check the width of the access point from Craigleith Hill Crescent first:

Drylaw park was one idea I'd considered, but not sure if it's navigable with a trailer (when I had to use it a few years ago it was pretty rough, maybe it's been improved?)

The route through the Western was also an idea but I sort of assumed that there are barriers and kerbs and so on and I'm not sure about doing it in reverse either. I think I'll need to see if I can work out the Grigor Av bit and give it a go one fine day... Thank you!

    Tricky one this.

There have been works in Drylaw Park on the E side of NEPN, new tarmac etc so you should check out if access has been improved.

However, coming off there leaves the not insignificant problem of crossing Telford Rd. There is a ped crossing near the hospital entrance but getting to it will involve some pavement cycling and there is, I think, one inconveniently placed bus stop which may obstruct a trailer.

I'm not sure which route through the WGH people have in mind, but the signposted one-way route has a lot of speed bumps. There is another sneak-through on the north side through the staff car parks but some of it is technically one-way and again the car park barriers may stop a bike-trailer combo.

Finally the bike-only turn into Craigleith Hill Avenue from Groathill Avenue has its own problems - cars can often be parked across it and in my experience, no matter how much one signals in the lead up to it, following drivers still don't expect bikes to stop there to turn as it's not somewhere they can go. Could be helped by the council moving some traffic islands to create a refuge but This Is Edinburgh...

"Also check the width of the access point from Craigleith Hill Crescent first"

This entrance is now much wider.

Probably worth a visit to see what they have done with new paths in the hospital grounds - are you allowed to cycle on them? Do they go anywhere useful?
