More than 4,500 riders are expected to take part in events during the TweedLove bike festival in the Borders.

The seventh edition of the Peebles-based festival starts on Saturday and runs until the end of the month. Riders from around the world as well as hundreds of children will take part in a wide range of events.

  2. LoveCross cyclocross race tonight. I was too late for a solo ride, so will be in the relay. My original partner was roughly the same pace as me, so a neat combination. However he dropped out, so I have a new partner....

The 20-something year old, Enduro racing son of the Mitchells of Cycle Law and RoadShare fame. He's going to be so disappointed.

  3. Superb night last night (and not just because my team, rather unexpectedly, won the pairs race). Before the racing there was a 'family ride' and it just goes to show what can happen when you close off roads.

It was just a short loop, probably not even a mile, right in the town centre, and for half an hour around 1000 people went round and round thoroughly enjoying themselves. Overwhelmingly dominated by kids, from teeny tots on balance bikes, to pre-teens haring round on MTBs (with not a single cross word about them weaving in and out). And a unicycle. And a tandem. And bagpuss.

Just brilliant. The town centre must have been completely shut to traffic for around 6 hours, and any diversion will have been pretty circuitous, but y'know what, it worked.

So your ringer worked? Seriously though, well done winning a race.

Congratulations WC, but did you only go half as far as you're telling us? The loop is just half a mile long.
(in case anyone is wondering, the ends of the closed sections were joined with one lane of the road barricaded off for the cyclists and the other lane under traffic signal control for alternating general traffic). The closure and diversion for the cycling are much less than for the Peebles Beltane Festival, when even the Tweed Bridge is closed at times. So these things can be done if there is enough support.

That definitely wasn't the case for either the family ride or the racing - the main High Street was completely closed off, as was the whole loop round down to the green by the river.

EDIT: Ah, at the very end. The family ride used that on its loop, while the cross race was more in and out of little alleyways, and climbing steps behind the church.

@wc I didn't know they/you were using the steps and alleyways - sounds more interesting than just road circuit.
    Thanks.

  9. @slowcoach, it's really because it was an urban cyclocross race. 5 sets of small hay bale hurdles, one section of about 7 deep car tyres to run through, up the steps behind the church, a gazebo with tape hanging down to ride through, a tight cobbled aleeyway turn with added switchbacks once through, and a zone for kids to stand with water pistols soaking you. Great evening all in all.

At some point I'll have uploaded photos to a shareable platform (of the family ride and the racing) to bung in here.

It was good to properly meet the Cycle Law family as well last night - genuinely nice folk.
