The former is larger and less efficient but forty quid cheaper. Which would give me more money to spend on the lights. Anyone any view on this?

I've used Shimano dynamos and a SRAM i-light D7. Solid axles all.

Reliable, no noticeable drag, can't complain. Unless you're trying to go really fast or really far in one go, I can't see a reason to pay more for the SP dynamo.

Taylor Wheels (German bike supplies) on FleaBay has some great deals on fully built wheels with dynamo hubs. Various diameters of rim, various specs of mostly Shimano hubs. Worth a look.

Thanks crow river, very unlikely that I will be going really fast or really far

Did get a pb Back from Carnwath this Saturday but did very little actual pedalling.

I agree with @crowriver. I have a shimano xt dynamo hub and notice no drag. I consider a son but kaputnik assured me shimano were just as good and I'm glad I took his advice.

The Shimano dynamo on my Dawes hybrid is now wired to a Philips saferide 60: works perfick and is more than bright enough for country lanes and unlit bike paths.

Been using the SP model myself, it's based off the much more expensive but renowned SON dynamos so more of a middle ground and I was so impressed with the V-brake model I bought a disk one when replacing my old wheel after some cretin ran into me. I'm sure the Shimano models would fine otherwise and certain models can use their brands of disk/roller-brake mounts.

I've been using the SP for the last couple of years and am very pleased with it.It's very light and there's no noticeable drag when the lights are on. The only down side is that if the bearings need replaced they're not user replaceable - something to consider for the long-term.

Personally I'd get the Shimano, the drag is probably equivalent to a slightly flappy jacket and much less than any form of luggage. The weight might be an issue but thats up to the user to decide if 500g will really make that much of a difference to their enjoyment whilst the extra cash might be enough to get away for a day on the train to somewhere different.

Shimano hubs are also effectively not user serviceable, if the bearing goes on the dynamo side there are two hair thin wires which will be broken when the hub is dismantled so you're relying on Shimano seals being as good as they are.

I've got two bikes with SP dynamos and SWMBO has shimano. It's been on her commuter for I think five years and still fine.

You won't really notice a difference riding, but the SP ones are nicer.
