Patrick Harvie: Transport policy is not about the environment - it's about public health

    ...

And at such enormous cost. For that road’s price-tag of nearly three quarters of a billion pounds, Glasgow could have had an airport rail link, a refurbished subway, the much-needed Crossrail scheme, a new fleet of buses to run a proper regulated service, and the biggest investment ever in infrastructure for walking and cycling. In short, we could have had a transformation in the whole city’s transport system and a radical shift toward sustainable, low-carbon, clean and healthy transport.

Ah, yes, the M74. Smashed through one of the unhealthiest cities in Europe, where most people don't own cars, in defiance of the findings of the public inquiry, in the full knowledge that it would poison the air. Those are the "progressive" values of Scotland's two self-styled "social democratic" parties.

The answer is now online at:

Search for "cycling" - can't find a way of directly linking to it. Prepare to be underwhelmed.
