Warning - the diversion on the cycle path northbound has changed, and there are now barriers just beyond the bus stop at the north end of the bridge. I saw the aftermath of a crash last night, but fortunately the guy was not too badly hurt. Just bleeding a lot.
I spoke to one of the workmen this morning and suggested they put a warning sign before the bus stop. He told me he'd seen another crash last night, but they hadn't done anything about it! Said he'd "speak to the boss".

Hopefully something will get done soon. In the meantime, be careful.

You mean two cyclists crashing into barriers that weren't in the way previously?

Hi, cyclists must observe 15mph speed limit and take care in roadworks but we'll add flashing lights to these barriers as added precaution

There should be some sort of renaming of the FRB to reflect its new purpose. Something like "Forth Sustainable Travel Bridge" or "Active Travel Forth Crossing". Something to reinforce to the Forth Bridges Operating Co & the SG who the stakeholders/customers of the old bridge are now (& whose safety they should be concerned with) & also why it need to be retained, and a message to drivists that, when the QC is shown to be a congested white elephant, that they can't demand 'the old bridge' back as well.

@murun, are the authorities going to prevent the old bridge becoming congested too when the new one is congested? Or are they going to hold their nerve and let the drivers see how much emptier it is if you use public transport or cycle?

Alas the empty old bridge will join the congestion further up the road?

The thing that amazes me about the exchange on Twitter is that the people managing the social media account have jumped to speed as an issue. There's no mention or inference that these crashes happened at speed. Also telling that they have still not accepted a failing on their part to ensure that there is appropriate signage. Unless I missed that?

Well exactly, gembo. I hope for 'hold nerve', but I predict/fear at least 'hard shoulder running' in time for next Holyrood election.

Even 'hard shoulder running' will not solve the congestion.

The only way to solve it is to bring back the tolls...

"The only way to solve it is to bring back the tolls..."

Given that Keith Brown's proudest boast before becoming a Minister of the Crown was his refusal to pay fines for non-payment of Skye bridge tolls*, I reckon his answer to that suggestion will be along the lines of "over my dead body". Given that he fought for Queen and Country in the Falklands, I'd take any such response seriously.

The chances of the SNP re-introducing tolls on any bridge are next to nil. However they might find some way of doing this by the back door: extend the Edinburgh LEZ to the Forth?

Presume the crashes above weren't actually ON the bridge??

This is the appalling official view -

chdot, my understanding is that you are correct. The barriers which have been erected over the cycle path are just north of the bus stop at the top of the stair. They are therefore not on the bridge and therefore not covered by the speed limit which doesn't apply to cyclists anyway.

Having said that I'm not sure why anyone would come round that bus stop without looking ahead for oncoming cyclists or being able to control their speed to avoid them. Of course perhaps it was dark or there were other reasons they couldn't see the barriers.

This morning I could see a digger working on the cycle path so knew something must have changed but like others couldn't see the barriers until almost at the bus stop. They were visible before the bus stop as I momentarily considered dropping off the kerb before the bus stop rather than go round but by then it was too late to do so.

Usual geniuses commenting: "The delays are caused by the 40 mph limit. Get the traffic moving and get buses OFF the new bridge asap."

    Aye right!

They have certainly made the detour visible.

There must be about 10 flashing lights on top of selected cones.

    ...
    But

I wonder what point they consider the "obstruction" to be passed.

I do believe there is still an uplift in rail fares of about £1 to cross the bridge, but it's all included in your ticket so nobody thinks about it

“Nobody wants to diminish the achievement of this great new crossing but at the same time nobody wants to be sitting in their car for hours every day just to cross a bridge.”

    Take the train then?

Predictable I suppose that the myth is being repeated by EEN commenters about the new bridge "adding capacity" and built to "relieve congestion". That's despite the original moniker being Forth Replacement Crossing: there's a hint in that about the alleged purpose of the new bridge. I see there are also calls for the old FRB to be made a Local Bridge For Local People To Cross The Forth.

Really are all drivers this moronic or is it just the ones that whinge the loudest?

As for Cole-Hamilton, what a disgraceful opportunist chancer.

It's simply inevitable that the FRB will be used pretty much as before with possibly heavy commercial trucks not being allowed, a bit like the weight limits you see on old bridges. There will be so much pressure to use it. I'm not sure where the congestion will be transferred to, possibly on the A90 where the two roads meet.

What is the point of building a new bridge cos an old bridge is falling down if y can just keep using the old bridge?

Also what is the point of having two congested bridges if you can have one congested bridge full of cars and one that runs free for buses?

Though as we have said up thread the congestion will just be over the bridge rather than on the bridge.

Is Alex Cole-Hamilton the Robert Kilroy-Silk de nos jours?

Dartfordisation of the Forth may have been the plan all along. It would explain a lot.

I crossed it twice by car this weekend. Certainly busy northbound on Friday at 4pm......but wouldnt the FRB be busy at that time as well?

Return journey on Saturday lunchtime was also busy - but there were (I understand) about 8000 Aberdeen fans at Murrayfied to play Hearts - and a lot were on cars/buses when I was travelling across.

Surely nobody in their right mind thought the new bridge would "ease" congestion????? Its a very nice bridge, but all it does is move car traffic 300 yards upstream.

I had no real choice regarding my weekend journey, my preference would have been the train but it wasnt feasible.

What astonished me most on these stores is people "taking a trip" over the new bridge as if it was some kind of tourist jolly !!

I've just emailed Alex Cole-Hamilton. I urge all of you, and constituents especially, to do the same.
