Motorists travelling across the bridge into Edinburgh in the morning during rush hour face an average speed of 24 mph, according to figures obtained by the Conservatives through Freedom of Information.

But Tory transport spokesman Jamie Green said: “The Queensferry Crossing was supposed to revitalise the economies of the surrounding areas, as well as ease congestion and connect the east of Scotland. The disappointing reality is that most motorists using the Queensferry Crossing could be overtaken by a bicycle. These slow speeds throughout our road network are a source of huge frustration to motorists and are an active hindrance to economic growth.”

These slow speeds throughout our road network are a source of huge frustration to motorists and are an active hindrance to economic growth.

We declare that the splendor of the world has been enriched by a new beauty: the beauty of speed. A racing automobile with its bonnet adorned with great tubes like serpents with explosive breath ... a roaring motor car which seems to run on machine-gun fire, is more beautiful than the Victory of Samothrace.

The Conservative party has been taken over by Italian Futurists. Pass it on.

Suddenly there were two cyclists disapproving of me and tottering in front of me like two persuasive but contradictory reasons. Their stupid swaying got in my way. What a bore! Pouah! I stopped short, and in disgust hurled myself — vlan! — head over heels in a ditch.

I'm pretty sure it was built to replace an existing crossing which was in danger of falling down. The only additional benefit was that it was designed to be less likely to close in strong winds.

They wouldn't be trying to mislead their numptyship into thinking new sensible life-saving speed limits were to blame for the New Bridge being less aspiringly whooshsome than dreamt?

If only there was some kind of market mechanism to limit demand on the bridge & ensure the resource was used efficiently. One might call it a toll.

Really dislike the implication in these type of articles that people who drive from Fife to Edinburgh to work are some sort of selfless, virtuous saviours of the economy...

The period covered by the Tories FoI request ran from the bridge's opening on 30 August 2017 until May 2018. The official speed limit started at 40mph, then 50mph and rose to 70mph on 19 December 2017. I would imagine three months of lower speed limits would have a significant impact on the average speeds quoted.

Still, I do have a gripe about the new bridge and was interested to see it raised last week by Tory MSP Jamie Greene, after he conducted some Freedom of Information enquiries. Sadly the bridge is not living up to its designed intentions, but this is not because of design flaws, but due to political correctness.

The new bridge has replaced the old bridge, but was limited by politicians to offer only two lanes each way. Surely it would have made sense to accommodate three lanes rather than two?

    "...but due to political correctness."

Quite right. You aren't even allowed to say "three lanes" in public without the thought police coming down on you.

    Barking. Absolutely barking.

That bridge seems to have driven many people quite mad.

Brian Monteith was of course the man who led the campaign to oppose the creation of the Scottish parliament and doubtless abjures all of its works as heretical carbuncles.

    The bridge should of course have been built with a gap in the middle to maximise economic gain;

I wonder which part of it's designed intention to replace the old bridge he is referring to. Perhaps he is bitter that public transport has it's own corridor or that Active travel isn't accommodated on the new bridge.

I haven't clicked the article as I have better things to read.

Worried parents at Echline Primary in South Queensferry have been calling for action since traffic on the town’s Bo’ness Road increased following the opening of the new bridge last year.

Snagging work on the trouble hit Queensferry Crossing will continue all through summer, transports chiefs revealed yesterday.

It will spell frustration for motorists forced to endure tailbacks getting on and off the new bridge.

But bosses say traffic flow times have actually improved, and insist the structure has already proved its worth to thousands of motorists.

.. but we should of course return to the non-existent public transport corridor up Queensferry Road which was integral to the project yet proved to be a fantasy too far for scotia moto-realpolitik

We should have a sweepstakes on the date of the announcement of Dartfordisation. Third Forth Crossing northwards Forth Road Bridge southwards. We all know it makes sense.

I've said it before and I'll say it again:

    Tolls.

Surely a toll would be a barrier to economic growth?

@neddie, aye but before that happens someone will need to "retire" Keith Brown. He built his career on non-payment of tolls (and related fines) for the Skye bridge. Be careful though, he's the only politician since Paddy Ashdown to have (probably) killed another human being with his bare hands...

23% or respondents either cycle or don't travel with peak flow.

57% of respondents agree that road building induces demand (or perhaps don't travel too or from Fife!)

20% of respondents are aware that there is a far bigger picture.

Even in the world of branding hype this must be in a class of its own -

By 2030 The Forth Bridges area will be recognised as a sustainable, high quality visitor destination, offering great customer service underpinned by an emotionally valued global brand.
