So is this new bridge all motorway and no walking or cycling?

If so, what's the Scot Gov's plan for when the Forth Road Bridge is no longer safe to use? What do pedestrians and cyclists do then?

Or is that simply not going to happen in the next 100 years?

You reckon the new bridge will last that long? Never mind the old one...

Here's how cyclists are supposed to cross the Forth:

Hmm. Both my children must provide my wife with a passport-standard head-and-shoulders photograph for their security paraphernalia, should their ballot entrybe successful.

During the A9 roadworks, they had the man w van thing ("call for assistance"). They should make the train free between Dalmeny and Inverkeithing, max of 12 bikes per vestibule.

    A. During the opening celebrations, all traffic will use Forth Road Bridge from 1 to 6 September. The Queensferry Crossing will open on the 7th once again.

    Q. When will the Queensferry Crossing become a motorway?

    A. The Queensferry Crossing will become a motorway and the Forth Road Bridge will become a public transport corridor in late October, early November. The date has not yet been announced.

    Q. When will the first road traffic collision occur on the Queensferry Crossing?

    Q. When will cyclists and pedestrians have a safe and convenient route to points in west Fife from the Forth Road Bridge?

    Q. Is it safe to eat canned tuna during the Queensferry Crossing opening celebrations ?

    Q. Why do Transport Scotland continue to insist on minimum width shared-use paths for cycling and walking even where there is loads of room for safer segregated infrastructure ?

The Queensferry Crossing will now close for six days just 48 hours after opening next week, Transport Scotland has announced.

The original predicted lifespan of the Forth Road Bridge was 120 years...

Somebody's being cynical here, I'm just not sure if it's me or them.

His estimate... means the cable-stayed structure would a permanent fixture on the east coast until 2067 at the earliest.

    Back to school...

In 150 years, oil will be so scarce and expensive, it won't get wasted commuting individuals from Fife one-by-one, in 3 tonne, 5 - 8 seat combustible metal boxes (c) Bob Gunderson.

Neither will it be so necessary for huge 8-axle lorries to rumble northward on the motorway with essential cargoes of coco-pops, miniature cocktail umbrellas and portable iPod speakers* for the needy masses of Cowdenbeath, Coupar Angus and Crieff**.

    * - Other frivolous consumer goods are available. Oh and I loved coco-pops when I was five.

** - Other Scottish settlements beginning with C are available.

"Queensferry Crossing will become a 70 mph motorway in the autumn"

So what is it when it opens, what signage?

40mph A road, same as the FRB.

It's only opening tonight (for two days) as Keith Brown absolutely guaranteed it would be finished by the end of August. It isn't completely finished - hence the six day closure and long period of 40mph running. It is also why the closure slowly grew from two to six days - with more and more "opening events" added.

So - not really on time and the original budget was so hugely inflated, it is really hard to know if it represents value for money (well, apart from the fact the FRB isn't actually falling down - so, you know...)

mostly this is to accomodate a full closure of FRB til November, so they can deal with existing patchwork repairs and ostensibly amend approach roads for public transport dominance, etc etc

no change for cyclists thereafter however, who will continue to duke it out on the "cycleway" with bridge contractors, vans and their building site infrastructure, for years to come

this is because they are constructing a new caged walkway underneath FRB, on both sides, simultaneously (for bridge staff not public)

they are perhaps 25% done on that lengthy endeavour

The stories in the office this morning of "new bridge CHAOS" are pretty hilarious.

Yeah it's still a bottleneck, and the shiny new road is stimulating even more demand from motorists. Sigh, they never learn.

None of that matters though because Keith Brown is clearly over the moon with his brand new toy. "Vroom, vroom!" goes Keith on the soon-to-be-motorway at two in the morning. Oh and no tolls either, eh Keith? I always thought non-payment of fines was a custodial sentence, but not if you're a government minister, it seems.
