EdFOC Edinburgh Night Ride - a great night's riding!

  1. Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed my second EdFOC Edinburgh Night Ride this year, which had the bonus of a fantastic sunrise and beautiful blue morning skies which were sadly absent in 2015.

Despite the delays caused by the three mechanicals my group had, and my rookie error as a first-time ride leader in getting a little far ahead with a group of riders at one stage, nothing could kill the enjoyment we all had. Great company, good chat and an atmosphere you just can't beat!

If anyone is ever in Gifford then I can highly recommend the Lanterne Rouge cafe, who kindly stayed open and laid on soup, bread, flapjacks, energy bars and hot drinks for over 60 cyclists who arrived in three waves. We enjoyed their normal daytime fare and cake three Sundays ago during a route recce ride too - lovely stuff & lovely staff.

A big thanks to Kim and Ulli from EdFOC for organising the event, support and food. I'll be there again next year ;-)

Did this ride last year, it's good fun and quite relaxed.

I saw you guys heading west past the Musselburgh race course as I was heading east out of town. Saw a couple of familiar faces.

I'll second that threefromleith, especially Ulli who puts far more work into the organisation than any of the other ride leaders. Our group seems to have all enjoyed it too despite some tiredness at breakfast. What time did you eventually make it back?

DaveC, I'm guessing it was one of the later groups you passed as I don't see you on Strava flyby.

Yeh, I don't see you on mine either. I was passing the race course just after 6am.

That sounds like Uli's group. We were running early so detoured via Tesco for a comfort break and didn't pass the racecourse.

I saw a group coming through Musselburgh heading past (or towards) the big Tesco about 10.30pm. Everyone looked well wrapped up.

@threefromleith I think I was in your group... I was the person with the p****ure near Seton Sands. It was only the 2nd I've had in years of riding around Edinburgh, so it was typical bad luck to get one on the Night Ride. But at least it was a 'proper' one as someone said.

I completely second what you say. It was really enjoyable and I hope to be back again next year.

  9. Hi friskiffla, yes! I must look up the name of that tool I have for getting stubborn tyres back on their rims for you :-)

I think our delays worked to our advantage, as we got the best sunrise and early-morning views this year.

  10. acsimpson - Ulli knew that route like the back of her hand :-)

Three of us did a recce ride round it with her two weeks before the actual ride, and there were no maps or Garmin Edges for her. She also knew in advance exactly where we should stop to regroup, or which detours to take if we were running too close to another group etc.

I filmed a lot of it so I could replay it and try to memorise the route, turns and landmarks. I also studied the route file. And *still* I had to rely on my Garmin a lot, which in turn was hopelessly unreliable in itself!

Ride leading is much trickier than it looks, and I wish I could pull it off as effortlessly and brilliantly as Ulli. (Though for sheer entertainment value, you can't beat David and his 'tour guide / ringmaster' persona!)

2017 event popped up on my Facebook feed this week. Contemplating signing up if there's still space, sounds like a good night. Anyone going this year?

Hopey if it's the EdFoC event you are looking for then i don't think you'll find it on Facebook. I don't think the program has been released for this year yet.

Expect copies of this year's programme with a very nice cover design to arrive in next day or so. 2017 website will be live later in week.

Places are now available on the Original and best Edinburgh Night Ride. Places on this ride will sell out, so it is best get in early if you want to be assured of a place.

    Beware of expensive imitations!

  16. Unfortunately I'm going to miss it this year as I'll be in Slovenia at the time.

Have fun - and I look forward to seeing everyone's photos of the night / morning afterwards!

It should be a good one this year. Unlike the usual June date it comes with a whole lot of extra night for no additional cost.

I'll be there as a ride leader again.
