Wow - this is really appalling.

I'm surprised the EEN didn't write the headline, "Woman attacked and robbed by cyclist"

Maybe they are learning to distinguish between a chav on a bike, and ordinary people who happen to use a bike as transport

Not good, pretty brazen in the middle of the day.

The location "Craigleith to Davidson's Mains" is rather vague, but I assume it must be in vicinity of House O' Hill Road given they apparently fled north towards Ferry Road.

"who carries 3 figure sums in handbags these days?"

People who only have basic bank accounts and have to pay their bills using PayPoint and the like, among others. Funnily enough, they also tend to be poorer people who are more at risk of crimes such as this one.

There's a serious lack of protection on NEPN. I don't remember noticing any CCTV cameras, and almost never see police.

Indeed. When ah were a lad ah remember being sent t'shop wi' a fistful of dollars* te buy new 'lectricity card....

    *Okay. Pounds.

I don't think much has changed on that score - exactly as The Boy says, definitely more likely to be poorer people that carry more cash.

Another reason why the NEPN is all well and good, but the current environment is a magnet for crime. Women, especially after dark, are reluctant to use it.

Of interest, about a month or so ago, I reported a motor-scooter theft and subsequent fire to 101. Was live describing the culprits whilst on my bike on the phone. The fire was under the bridge at Corbie Hill at the back of Silverknowes Neuk. Police and Fire Brigade attended in about 15 mins.

The police could do us all a favour and walk/cycle down there now and again. Cars are next to useless for dealing with crime in such areas.

Yes, sorry if I was a bit opaque, but I read this as someone who's just cashed their 'benefits' or paycheque or headed off to pay their rent in or something - a known or at least predictable route/schedule.

    Very sad.

@Hart's Cyclery - saw four pedal-plod on the paths around Leith Links the other day - it *looked* like one leader and three learners, so perhaps we will see them riding around the paths more regularly in future.

@SRD, could well be someone has spotted her taking cash out and followed or whatevs - especially as it was during the day. Though tbh I expect it's just one of those things - a phone with three figure cash value is slightly more hassle to fence than cash money, but we wouldn't be surprised to read of such an item being stolen.

@SRD, No one 'cashes' any benefit these days, or goes off to 'pay their rent'. Any benefits get paid directly to the landlord don't they, and all benefits are paid into the bank.

Housing benefits can be paid to the landlord, but are paid to the tenant by default. Which is as it should be.

edit: and as mentioned above, poor people (particularly those on benefits) are far more likely to only have a basic bank account that will see them having to withdraw cash to pay bills etc.

Just seen a tweet from STV news saying that Police have investigated but "no further action required".

Not sure if that means a/ there was no crime b/ there was a crime but they aren't investigating further or c/ there was a crime and the case has been solv-ed.

Kaputnik, I'm thinking c, and she was targeted, and she knew to her attacker. (And, picked them out in a line up, or however crime is solved)

"Police are investigating after a man was raped on a cycle path in north Edinburgh in the early hours of this morning.

An area near to the exit for Ainslie Park has been sealed off with officers standing guard as.

Detectives have now launched a full investigation.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said “Police in Edinburgh are investigating a report that a 36-year-old man was the victim of a serious sexual assault in the Pilton area in the early hours of Monday, 28 October."

terrible - utterly terrible - used to use cycle lanes in this area when i worked at crewe toll - i think there have been quite a few incidents around the cycle lanes of that area, pretty sure someone was beaten up there as well as knife threats to cyclists....

Sounds horrible, but to put it into context we are talking about an incident in the early hours of the morning. It won't be putting me off using the path.

@stiltskin fair one, I should probably have qualified my statement with "in the late evening", as I'm wont to commute back from CT fairly late at times. Always been a bit wary of that path much after about 730pm in the winter

This is why active travel routes need to be on well-lit busy roads, not shady back streets and sunken paths.

As ever Edinburgh expects the active traveler to be an eco warrior and an infantry soldier. And we're shocked - rightly - at a man being raped. I shall endeavour to remember that feeling in future when women say what they need from their city.

No criminality found in Edinburgh cycle path 'rape'

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "No further police action is required.

Strange. Was there no incident and no false report? Surely either of those would count as criminality. Perhaps PS only consider it to be criminal if charges are pressed.

During the day when the path is busy it has always felt safe but if you are on a stretch by yourself and passing a group it can put you on edge.

...given that i was assaulted and knocked unconscious a few weeks ago in broad daylight ..500m up the same path from there and the police didn't respond as they were chasing a stolen moped....im not sure its a terribly safe place
