Bereft without Phil and Paul on ITV4 ... they must have commentated every Tour I have watched since I got hooked in 1992 watching it on Channel 4

I'm not a David Miller fan, but I do think his commentary is amazing. He explains things so much better than anyone else I've heard.

Maybe. I am a creature of habit though and it doesn't feel quite like the Tour without all the Liggetisms.

Also whoever was commentating the sprint threw me completely by talking about 'on the right hand side of the road' meaning the left of the screen. Not helped by the fact that we're having to watch it on my laptop as ITV4 has disappeared from our channel list somehow and rural broadband being what it is it's all a bit blocky

  9. Oh much much prefer Ned Boulting and David Millar (the latter has a lot of faults, but his insights are very... erm... insightful). Ligget and Sherwen are one of the main reasons I switched to watching on French telly!

Ned 'n Dave, as we will have to call them in due course, are way better than Phil 'n Paul. Phil's commentary has either been going downhill for years or the more I have learned about the sport the more I have realised that he has been talking nonsense. His rider recognition is pretty ropey too. Paul used to have some insights, but he just seems to rely on his clichés and constantly reaching into his suitcase of tourist facts to fill airtime.

Ned's a bit sketchy on rider recognition at the moment, but that'll come with more practice.

Rob Hatch and Sean Kelly are the best paring on the go at the moment, IMHO, but Eurosport inexplicably put the awful Carlton Kirby on for the bigger races. Carlton's verbal diarrhoea and lack of insight are bad enough, but some his language ("beasted" etc) is out of order, and his favouritism and excess excitement set my teeth on edge.

Six hours is a lot of air time to fill with chat. I used to love spotting when the guy started reading out from the guidebook.

I suppose with the cricket not much is happening and the radio commentators on test match special developed a very clubby feel. Jonners, Blowers etc. Emulated by Peter allis on the golf and Henry long worth (was it?) beforehand. All very nostalgic and at times reactionary.

  12. The cricket comparison is a good one. I guess R4 rotates the presenters which maybe helps it stay fresher. There's something truly relaxing about listening to TMS. Maybe we should all starts sending Ned n' Dave cakes....

Or hair gels, our caps etc would lead to more audience participation, interest etc. The cricket lot are authoritative but not always serious.

Phil and Paul are still digging deep into their suitcase of courage doing the daily tour commentary for NBC Sports USA.

For me that's the most annoying thing about their syndicated commentary act, it being pitched directly at the casual american viewer.

Easy enough to find a live NBC Sports stream with a creative google search, if you're feeling nostalgic.

Gembo, I think it was Henry Longhurst. If I remember right from my golfing days he wrote a couple of memoirs, Never on a Sunday and Always on Weekdays. Or it might be the other way round.

Yes long hurst, just remember him and allis was his apprentice. Presume print journalist who started the BBC commentary. Ta cyclingmollie.

  28. Love the fact that, after the first stage win, he had his daughter and asked her what she'd now be getting, and she replied, "Flowers". And then when he was on the podium for the second win she just immediately took the flowers that the dollybird had to hand to Cav.

Also nice that Cav, in every interview so far, has managed to shoehorn in the Qubeka bikes-for-kids purpose.

He's a real pro, in the best sense of the word. I also liked his unprompted mention of remembrance at Utah Beach on Saturday.
