Many people on here enjoy the railway route bike paths and the canals.

There have been various threads about heritage/relics - today it's the Granton Gasometer.

Additionally kaputnik has just written -

"In the spirit of Anth's 7 hills ride maybe there needs to be a 7 wonders of industrial Edinburgh route?"

    He has some suggested sight/sites.

    Various things here -

Don't know if there is any sort of local history society that takes a particular interest(?)

I've already got a hefty Google Earth KML file with as much stuff plotted out as I could glean off of publically available sources on the net; Scran, Scotlands Places and Canmore databases, NLS digital map library etc. It's a constant work in progress but I've achieved most of the railways in Scotland (Ayrshire and a lot of the Lanarkshire mineral lines are a gap) broken down into the pre-grouping constituent company and a lot of big industrial activities (shipbuilding, coal mining, steel working, shale mining, aluminium smelting, power generation).

PM me if you want me to make you a copy available. It's as good as any a starting point and you might be able to fill in some of my blanks!

industrial heritage, love it, cant beat exploring placess where people used to earn a living, anyone tried 28 days later. An urban explorers website, lots of great pics and info about finding places. Sometimes a wee bit naughty, theyactually get into working sites as well but on the whole its older stuff. My area, falkirk, maddiston is riddled with old railway beds, most are now unrideable but still interesting.Just of the union canal, at the basin near the west end of the accie as we used to call it ( avon aquaduct ) there are several railways that converge, diverge ? A village, complete with school that was buried by waste slag from the local Steins brickwork, fascanating place, lovely dafodil edged pathways, nice stone walls engulfed by a man made mountain ! There are lots of brickworks, mines and possibly the oldest, first industrial foundry in scotland close by.Some of thes sites are relatively easy to access with no barriers or fences. If any body wants further details or grid references etc give me a shout ! Think I might take the car today, 13 hours in ma lorry yesterday, finished at 22.00hrs, cycle home was not fun !
