    CRAIGMILLAR CASTLE

We would like to advise that Craigmillar Castle will be closed to visitors from Monday 5 September to Monday 19 September 2016 inclusive.

Members visiting the area may wish to consider nearby Historic Scotland properties as alternatives.

Please see our website http://www.historicenvironment.scot/visit-a-place/ to explore other places to visit.

We apologise for any inconvenience this temporary closure may cause.

    Kind regards,

I was running on Craigmillar Hill at lunchtime. There was a genial ruffian lounging on the grass in the sunshine with his dog, his mountain bike and his bottle of juice. He was inside the perimeter fence of the waste recycling centre.

Some things are only shut if you think they're shut.

I'll bet the castle's shut because Craigmillar Castle Road is being resurfaced. Obvs you couldn't walk there by all the paths.

Startled to see the Union flag flying over Craigmillar Castle and a hundred-odd plaid-wearing ruffians loafing about.

I asked what was transpiring and they said they were unemployed Glaswegians sent to be extras in the filming of something called Outlander.

I'm hoping they actually had Equity cards and were in fact real actors adopting a meta-role for my benefit.

This Outlander must be well made. Spotted today that it's the pre-1801 Union flag that's flying. Nice detail.

My 2 favourite things about Craigmillar Castle.

1 - The huge vanity pond out the back in the shape of a P (for Preston, the owning family. See also Preston Field, Preston Grange, Preston Pans, Preston Links)

2 - The punning masonry over one of the doors that has a book press over a barrel. Press. Tun. Presstun. Preston. Geddit?

    ENews catching up -

A spokesman for Historic Environment Scotland said: “Craigmillar Castle will be temporarily closed to visitors from the 5th to 19th September, inclusive. This is to accommodate third party filming within the castle and grounds. The castle will reopen to visitors, under normal opening hours, on Tuesday.”

    "The huge vanity pond"

Vanity P, perhaps, but I think it was used as a 'fish farm'.

Always thought it should have been recreated as a pond.
