AROUND 200 cyclists took to the streets this morning to show support for a proposed £6 million cycle “superhighway” stretching across central Edinburgh.

That'll be the official figure now!

"The proposed route would be utter madness. It is clear to anyone who attended the event today that all the pollution was caused by the mere presence of the cyclists. The noise of them was awful too, and the roads were terribly congested on account of all the bikes cycling all over the place mowing people down and running red lights. What is needed is a sensible modern approach which is to widen the road as much as possible and promote as much traffic flow so that the maximum number of single occupancy vehicles can drive through, at a speed which is deemed sensible by the driver - none of these nanny state speed limits. Once that is done, the businesses will thrive and Roseburn will be a really lovely place to go shopping or take your kids out for the day."

    Brilliant!

Just remembered that I spoke (quite amicably) with the Roseburn Cafe owner.

And I managed to get some of the Andrew Gilligan quote out to him:

"Some people think traffic is like rainwater and the roads are the drains for it. If you narrow the pipe, they say, it will flood. If you block one road, they say, the same amount of traffic will simply spill over to the nearest easiest routes. "That’s the sort of argument made against our cycle superhighways, or our current proposal to cut rat-running through Regent’s Park by closing some of its gates. "But in real life, once the builders have finished, the spill never actually happens. The pipe doesn’t flood; some of the water goes away instead. Because traffic isn’t a force of nature. It’s a product of human choices. If you make it easier and nicer for people not to drive, more people will choose not to drive." - Andrew Gilligan

It occurs to me that one thing some Roseburn traders might fear, consciously or subconsciously, is the actual construction phase. If, very big if, this ever happens, I hope that a clause is written into the contract that the work should be completed in X days, where X is a reasonable but not very big number. Edinburgh street work takes too long - Calton Road?

    @ih

I suspect the Roseburn traders think it's going to be like the Trams all over again.

However, a segregated cycleway is not the same as a tram line. You don't need to dig the road out to 1 metre depth & install reinforced concrete for starters. I think the segregated section on Buccleuch St only took about 12 weeks to do and even then it had been done twice.

I doubt the traders know that.

edd1e_h Agree, it isn't the tram. I believe it should be possible to get that section in and restored in considerably less than 12 weeks. Can't think of any good reason why it should take 3 months.

"Went to Cafe Colpamia afterwards (on Murrayfield Place just opposite the old bridge) and had very nice cappuccino and apple pastry. A Roseburn lady who rode with us told me it was the only cafe that didn't put a 'stop the track' poster up, so I thought I'd support it."

    Others probably will too!

Responses from two of my councillors

    Gavin Barrie

The SNP group will be supporting the East-West cycling project to enhance the public realm, improve conditions for cyclists and address longstanding issues (such as the Russell Road/Roseburn Street junction).

While the final decision on this will be taken at the Transport Committee on the 30th of August, we have taken on board many comments that have been communicated by the local community and organisations and hope you'll be satisfied that these concerns and aspirations have been adequately addressed.

    and Nigel Bagshaw,

    Thank you for your email.

I and my Green colleague will be voting for Option A tomorrow, but I fear we may be alone.

    Not looking good then.

A personal but not promising response from Lewis Ritchie, SNP

Thanks for your comments, which have been passed to Adam. I do not sit on the Transport Committee so will not have a vote, however, I must admit that for what its worth, I favour option B. However, I believe there is real commitment behind the Roseburn project, and look forward to tomorrow’s decision.

Seems quite a few people were invited to 'b*gger off' by a chap on the Option B demo. In retrospect I have to conclude that he was trying to get lamped for the cameras, which is sad.

  14. Not had time to go through all the shots yet, they'll be online (and emailed to you HC) later tonight.

"look at the traffic - they created it"

    That's some brilliant logic there

The cars have nowhere to go. That is not what we want.

I did detect incredulity at the idea that car traffic is anything other than a fundamental and inevitable part of Roseburn rather than something that some people somewhere decided to cause and encourage.

"the idea that car traffic is anything other than a fundamental and inevitable part of Roseburn"

Well yes, but the *point* is that a % STOP and give some shops 'half their income', so obviously some traders want more traffic...

    P.s.

No-one has mentioned the 'miracle' that they where NO vehicles parked/loading when we were there!!!

Judging by countless reports here by daily commuters that must be a first.

@chdot Is that irony that I'm too daft to recognise? There was definitely a truck and a car on the south side, and I thought I saw something on the north side but not 100% sure about that.

@chdot: No, there were cars parked on the south side. On the north side there was a van half on the pavement. See here:

I'm particularly proud of that second one. I think it encapsulates everything about Roseburn Terrace in one image.

    For some light relief....

I spoke to Pete at the end and commented that they got to stand in the sun and we were in the cold shade on the bridge. (I was shivering during one interview).

He said they were outside no.49 as that's where Algo's map of the route had it's pin for the finishing point.

    Made me chuckle...

Ha that is brilliant. I wish I'd chosen an arbitrary location a bit further west now - perhaps the Nissan dealership

@algo - If that was the case best to have sent them to the stadium or the park they crave so much. Then arrive after the route had concluded.

My partner couldn't make the ride today. I've been asking him to write me a wee post for my blog for ages, so this evening he penned a piece on the East West route in lieu of his attendance. He's a new rider so his perspective is hopefully echoed by many others that would like to cycle more.

Did anyone else notice the bike helmet wielding anti man get into his car just north of the bridge. My brother pointed him out and only just caught a glimpse myself.

I suppose with all the lies they spout a missleading prop or two should be expected.
