SNP motion wants it moved to the side of the river,

"Further, that Council agrees that the Ayrshire Roads Alliance investigate alternative routes for the cycle path specifically including the route along the path running parallel to the South bank of the River Ayr."

That would be nicer but loses you some height. When you get to Dam Park it's up hill in every direction… although the hills don't seem as big now as when I was at school. Even Mill St.

    Might be expensive(?)

And it's the old leisure v transport nonsense.

Wasn't the 10% by 2020 changed from 'all journeys' to 'journeys to work'?...

Aha! Now it's understood. The Daily Wail hath spoken. Cycle lane lunacy! The new blight paralysing Britain.

Aye, unless they really are the Tartan Tories?

Unfair that. However on a raft of policies, from transport to taxation, the SNP are pretty much in step with the Tories. On others, they're more social democratic.

Very difficult not to breach Forum Rule 2 in response to this.

It's imperative Sustrans demand the funding they provided be repaid immediately, along with surcharge of the admin costs they incurred considering what has turned out to be a vexatious application.

Was the option to improve it on the table or a simple keep it/ditch it vote?

Notice of Motion from Councillor Allan Dorans, seconded by Councillor Ian Douglas:-
“That Council agrees that the recently constructed bi
-directional cycle lane at Holmston Road,
Ayr imposed by the Ayrshire Roads Alliance without consultation is removed and the
carriageway restored to the original condition existing prior to these works taking place.
That Council agrees that the Ayrshire Roads Alliance carry out this work immediately with the
costs being met, at this stage, from uncommitted reserves.
That Officers are requested to enter into dialogue with East Ayrshire Council for
reimbursement for any such costs incurred by this Council.
Further, that Council agrees that the Ayrshire Roads Alliance investigate alternative routes for
the cycle path specifically including the route along the path running parallel to the South bank
    of the River Ayr.”

Ah, that makes it clear. It's a pissing contest between two Councils.

The Ayrshire Roads Alliance is a joint venture between two neighbouring councils, but led by the "other" one, so when the Alliance does something in Ayr, the councillors there kick up a fuss.

Seems to me we have our own version of 'Brexit dividend" in Scotland. Except the pent up prejudice, vitriol, hatred and anger isn't being directed at 'foreigners' but at 'cyclists'...

    " Party lines?"

South Ayrshire Council has 10 Conservatives, 9 SNP, 9 Labour, and 2 independents.

So 19 - 11 could be Tories + SNP against Labour + Indies. Sounds familiar.

    Local paper report

    http://www.ayradvertiser.com/news/14786829.The_Holmston_Road_cycle_lane_will_be_RIPPED_UP/

There was a motion to monitor it for six months but that was defeated.

Not only are they cutting off their nose to spite their face, they're also sending themselves the bill.

I think that was the case in this vote but… you might be wrong on the familiar thing.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Ayrshire_Council_election,_2012

"Following the election the Conservative Party formed a minority administration working in a Partnership Agreement with the Labour Party members. Both Independents are also supporting the administration. This replaced the previous Conservative minority administration which existed from 2007-2012."

@folds I reckon ih means familiar Tory SNP anti cycle lane faction as with roseburn here in Edinburgh. Likely that only you, me and maybe Wingpig have more than passing awareness of holmston road in Ayr. Have you seen the makeover craigie college received when it became the university of west Scotland?

Went there for a conference. Quite liked the building and the grounds but curiously little provision for walkers/cyclists as I recall! We stayed in the halls on the far end of campus and it was actually tricky to find them on foot.

Think there is a cycle path from the grounds out into the Ayrshire countryside along the river @pioaad. Though probably nothing going into Ayr centre.?

There is a riverside path yes, it does go into the town centre too (gravelly and poorly lit). Was thinking more of the campus itself (behind the building away from the river) which was mostly roads and parking lots.
