To avoid polluting* chdot's serious "Option A+" thread with bonkers ideas, I thought I'd better start a new one.

    So far we've had:

    - a floating loading bay in the middle lane of 3 lanes, with narrow and 20mph moving lanes either side (to satisfy loading for shops on both sides).

    - removal of the advertising hoarding and bulldozing of a banking and a stone wall to make way for off-street parking.

    - an elevated cycle way cutting through above the noxious mess below, with the road enclosed to prevent fumes escaping.

    - an elevated motorway with spaghetti on/off ramps leading directly to the shops.

    Any more...?

    *No pun intended

I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

Flowers and hanging baskets could improve the place.

    Ta

"- removal of the advertising hoarding and bulldozing of a banking and a stone wall to make way for off-street parking."

This one is a mystery to me.

Large amount of dead space/land, which (I think) came from the cutting towards Craigleith Station.

It would cost money to remove, but they are currently doing similar at the Haymarket goods yard.

Could build a few houses or an office block or just a bit of car parking!

Remove flood defences. Let Water of Leith flood. Restore to marshland. Raised foot and cycle bridges on wooden piles.

I said that to a customer once about their old, hacked website. They didn't laugh.

Knock down the shops to make space for parking?

One-way loop system for thundering motor thingbies, like around West Maitland/Torphichen/Morrison.
Pulley systems for transporting goods from whichever side the loading bays are on across to their target premises.
Free active travel awareness counselling for people whose business types are unsuitable to a narrow road without rear access and help with relocating somewhere more suitable for large-vehicle-mediated trade and replenishment.

A bypass tunnel so only local access and a more direct tram is allowed.

Make Roseburn Terrace entirely tax free. Apart from a land value tax.

No land value tax will be payable if there's no land?

It could be called Rosebasin and market itself as a Venitian escape from the perils of land-based transport. It'd probably be easier to excavate and flood it than carve it out to let the road dip down underneath a roofed street-wide shopping arcade at ground level.

"roofed street-wide shopping arcade at ground level"

Should do that without the water.

    Tram in tunnel beneath.

I think there should be nice glass roofs in the places CEC/LB calls Interchanges - Haymarket, Lothian Road, Waverley etc.

Well, sir, there's nothing on earth
    Like a genuine,
    Bona fide,
    Electrified,
    Six-car
    Monorail! ...
    What'd I say?
    Monorail!
    What's it called?
    Monorail!
    That's right! Monorail!
I hear those things are awfully loud...
It glides as softly as a cloud.
Is there a chance the track could bend?
Not on your life, my Art Shop friend.
    What about us brain-dead slobs?
You'll all be given cushy jobs.
Were you sent here by the devil?
No, good sir, I'm on the level.
The ring came off my pudding can.
Take my pen knife, my good man.
    I swear it's Roseburn's only choice...
Throw up your hands and raise your voice!
    Monorail!
    What's it called?
    Monorail!
    Once again...
    Monorail!
But Roseburn Street's still all cracked and broken...
Sorry, HankChief, the mob has spoken!
    Monorail!
    Monorail!
    Monorail!
    Monorail!
    Mono... D'oh!

An 100 story high car shuffler outside every shop. Then every motorist could park outside the front door. They would press a button to have their car shuffled back to the front door when they leave. The cost would be astronomical but you can't put a price on satisfaction for the hard-pressed otherwise law abiding motorist.

Walls seem to be popular again - wall off entrances/exits to make sure that the street is just for local people.

I'd like some Escher ramps, one eastbound and one westbound, so that my journey to/from work is always a downhill freewheel. I'm reliably informed by small businesspersons of Roseburn that Edinburgh is hilly, so the Escher cycleways should be an ideal solution to promoting mass bicycle use
