On discussing handwear at the weekend with several others, it is felt that waterproof materials although they may be windproof too tend to retain moisture when you get hot and sweaty and then you hands start to chill more and more. Cheap fleecy type of gloves or plain windstoppers with a merino wool pair of liners or some other breathable thin liners were thought the best option. Personally I wear windstoppers and merino liners (I would like to try some silk liners) and that usually keeps out the cold. Like your footwear if you gloves are a tight fit it affects the blood circulation and your extremities will feel the cold more. Wet is a different problem altogether but I do put my gloves though the wash with my jackets with waterproofer, and it does seem to help. However, the fleecy gloves dry faster and the moisture wicks faster with the heat from you hand in them rather than that "boil in the bag" effect with waterproof materials.

Liz - hmmm - the sealskinz and gore gloves have a wicking layer first, then the waterproof membrane then the material to keep you warm. That is the theory. IN practice it does appear to be a sales pitch rather than a true fact. I had a pair of leather motorbike gloves with cotton lining, a bit chunky - took a while to dry but hands rarely wet or cold. I am skeptical on waterproof anything as I am a big sweater. THus the more waterproof the garment is, the less breathable it is and I become quite damp. I was considering a PRotective Qashi jacket which claims to be both highly waterproof and highly breathable but I remain very doubtful and unwilling to spend the money, even with 15% off in EBC at mo. Maybe I will win the competiton and get one with the prize money. I am a bit skeptical about my chances in the comp.given my overall skepticism about waterproof kit.

weather for tomorrow morning looks same as it was today. I shall dig out the dayglo sealskins and give them a shottie in the cold and report back on findings.

    Cold again.

Watch out for the frost hollows.

Cold feet - dampness must be an issue, unwicked sweat or external water (usually rain) must be key factors. So 'good' socks. Various mentions above about thickness and materials.

Mention has also been made of circulation. Presumably this has heart and efficient bloodflow factors. But what about warm legs?

If I want to make sure I keep warm I put on my waterproof trousers which also have a liner, so not just 'plastic bags'.

Reference have been made to people still cycling in shorts. Do they have wonderful circulation, amazing socks or cold feet?

    Any (medical) doctors on here?

My feet go straight from cold-on-the-outside-but-comfortable-on-the-inside to way-too-hot-and-sweaty at the slightest provocation. Goreskin shoes and normal thin ankle socks are doing me OK at the moment (and, unlike previous years, are staying dry in the wet) but I'll probably switch to thicker and longer socks by January, though I quite like the wee cold gap between leg-warmers and shoes. My leg muscles seem to generate huge amounts of heat, a pain in the summer when I still need to wear outer baggies to carry things in but a boon in the winter when they keep the rest of me warm as long as they're moving, whether walking or cycling. Conversely, my hands become painful when cold, though when walking they can just go in my pockets.

again absolutely fine on the clothing department, think I've got my kit just right this year. Again mechanically all wrong, with my crank arm coming loose, then off as I tried to get to a garage.

There are few things funnier looking than someone still clipped in with a crank arm flapping about off thier shoe.

REALLY tightened it this time thanks to the nice chap at the Classic Car Club. Think I need to get a lock washer.

"Think I need to get a lock washer."

If the crank has worked completely loose, chances are that the hole is no longer square enough to stay on, so you might need a new crank.

Have still had the shorts on from time to time, but mainly into the terrible trackies. CRC socks and shirt arrived today, not a moment too soon

Wore the fluo sealskinz gloves today with the icebreaker liners. I think this morning was slightly warmer than yesterday (even though I was on the road an hour earlier) but my hands definitely took longer to get initially cold and then warmed back up quicker.

I didn't feel so cold today, my feet were fine but strangely I have noticed that the fingers of my left hand - the hand where the fingers of my glove DON'T have holes in - are getting cold but my right ones aren't?

Those gloves have been very annoying-they are black with a white stripe down the little finger. The black material is an excellent insulator and has kept three fingers and my thumb lovely and warm. The white material is complete rubbish.

'Twas 4 degrees warmer this morning (on my kitchen window sill). I was working at home yesterday so I've still not had a sub-zero commute yet this winter.
