Every summer in Paris, the city closes an almost two-mile stretch of road along the Right Bank of the Seine and turns it into a beach, complete with sand, beach huts, deckchairs, and parasols. This year, Paris decided not to re-open the road at all, turning the riverside into a permanently pedestrianized area.

I've walked along there, last summer when we were over for Paris Brest Paris. But to be balanced, half of Paris goes away on holiday during the month of July so when we cycled through to the start and back afterwards (via Gare De Nord) the roads were rediculously quiet.

I imagine the traffic just flows onto nearby roads when its closed.

The one thing I liked about Paris was that their bus lanes were seperated from the private veh lane traffic by a kerb, which prevents traffic filtering in when the road becomes busy. They should do this here.

"Some people think traffic is like rainwater and the roads are the drains for it. If you narrow the pipe, they say, it will flood. If you block one road, they say, the same amount of traffic will simply spill over to the nearest easiest routes. "That’s the sort of argument made against our cycle superhighways, or our current proposal to cut rat-running through Regent’s Park by closing some of its gates. "But in real life, once the builders have finished, the spill never actually happens. The pipe doesn’t flood; some of the water goes away instead. Because traffic isn’t a force of nature. It’s a product of human choices. If you make it easier and nicer for people not to drive, more people will choose not to drive." - Andrew Gilligan
