Sabotage!

I was walking along Blackhall Path this morning and saw a number of clusters of large tacks.

I think I kicked them all into the grass verges, but I might have missed some. And, even if I got them all, I suspect there'll be more on the path within the next few days.

    Take care.

PS A few days ago, the bridge from the end of Corbiehill Ave (that leads down to the path) was covered in glass.

I kicked most of that into the verges, but I saw some more there again today.

Thanks! I keep meaning to investigate how to attach a broom to my bike for these sorts of objects on the paths.

A normal dustpan-brush is small enough to fit into most bags.
My plastic snow shovel (ideal for scraping away leaf-mulch from path edges in late autumn) comes in two parts which screw together, which would be a good arrangement for a pannierable brush for faster glass-clearance. Be careful your bristles aren't too springy as I once had a wee glass splinter ping back towards me from a lamppost and draw a very small amount of blood when sweeping a carpet of glass away from the bottom of the slope up to Hawthornvale.

    Lovely.

I didn't notice any pins first thing this morning or late last night, but didn't find any in my tyres either. I shall pay attention on my way home this evening, so thank you for the warning.

The natives seem to have lost interest in using the wee apples that grow by the path as missiles too, which is nice.

Some police forces have a rolling magnet affair for scooping up tacks. Might not work on brass ones though

How about a rolling magnet with a felt cover!!

    Unstoppable!

Might be unrelated, but did anyone see the cooncil car on the blackhall path this morning? The driver seemed blissfully unaware of most things, including various cyclists stuck behind him.

Saw them last night too just at the first bridge west of Craigleith. I was in a hurry so didn't have time to stop although subsequently did feel a bit bad about not doing my bit. No sign this morning though so thank you for your efforts @gibbo.

thank you for your efforts @gibbo.

You're welcome. I happen to walk from DM to Craigleith (and back) about once a week.

Whenever I do, I look out for glass on the path and kick it to the verges when I see any.

(So, if you see some nutter who looks like he's kicking fresh air, that might be me.)

In a better world(/city), the council would employ someone to do this.

Many times in the past, I've reported it to west team/east team/council, but despite promising to look into it, they rarely bother.

Isn't the same path were there were wires set up at neck height some time ago?

Did that happen in the section between the "Corbiehill Ave bridge" and the back of Tescos?

    I can't remember.

I saw these in Dunelm Mill on Saturday and thought of this thread:
    Compact dustpan & brush set

@gibbo I think it was the non-tarmaced section that goes straight on when the tarmac goes right - I rarely go that way but I think that's the stretch you mean as I think there's a Tesco at the other end.

    @fimm

I remember reading the thread, but it was years ago - and I lived in a different part of town at the time - so the details don't stick in my memory.

But my vague recollection was that it was that non-tarmaced section.

@gibbo @fimm. Yes the non-tarmaced section just as you enter the Tesco car park. At the time number of councillors responded that they would be pushing to get that section paved and lit...

"At the time number of councillors responded that they would be pushing to get that section paved and lit..."

Been going on for 30 years (probably longer).

Big standoff between council and Safeway about ownership.

(Both surprisingly reluctant to take responsibility!)

Plans to increase size of store which might have had upgrading of path as 'planning gain' never got approved.

Sustrans decided it was easier/better to take route towards Queensferry via quiet side road and narrow cut-through.

Just more proof that Edinburgh isn't really an activetravel city.

Should be easier with Tesco? At least one of their shops acknowledges the existence of cyclists (albeit whilst simultaneously blocking their view and interfering with their panniers with their "Hello" sign) and they don't even have their glass-shattering bins right beside the cycle path access, unlike the similarly path-spur-accessible Co-op at Queen's Southferry.

"Big standoff between council and Safeway about ownership."

I recently had some correspondence with the (now) owners Tesco. They know that they own this land but don't seem particularly interested in upgrading it.

Can you ask them to send you a map of which bit they own?

Suspect it's not the whole path - unless CEC sold it to them!

Perhaps if they have no interest in improving access for their customers, they could give the land to those who will get it done(?)

I was in contact with both CEC and Tesco regarding the building works relating to a house which was built just next to the bridge where the dirt-track starts. Both seemed to confirm that the Tesco owned the whole dirt-track from the bridge to the store.

I will see if I can get a map from them to confirm.

It is very specific. That route up Gladsmuir is regularly used by a few cycling club for training/racing so I wonder if that's why this section was targeted?

I assume whoever reported the debris regularly rides that route and could confirm it was clear in the morning of the 16th and not later on in the day.

I use that route quite regularly, though not in the last couple of months (Zwift).

Possibly. From the incident number, I was rather assuming it was reported to the police on 31/03. Hence wondering where the 16th window had come from.

Do incident numbers get recorded when an appointment is made or when a statement is taken?

It could also have been reported later after someone was advised to go to the police.
