The Telegraph has a story about some idiot cycling irresponsibly.

But what's more interesting is what the magistrate said when fining him:

"And, above all, it diminishes the really rather low esteem cyclists already have.

"People do not like cyclists, and you are doing nothing to enhance their reputation."

Could you imagine a magistrate saying that about any other minority?

The guy's French too. Maybe 'cyclists' have sunk lower than 'EU citizens'?

A French criminal banker but he's hated for cycling. Can we sink any lower?

Well, the judge is right, given the dog's abuse I get its clear many people don't like cyclists, and the perpetrators behaviour, rightly or wrongly, will not have done anything to help that.

absolutely. any more behaviour like this, and people might start being admonished with nothing more than a paltry fine for killing cyclists.

She's just telling the truth isn't he? People, i.e.. drivers, don't like cyclists.

Van parked on double yellow lines very close to junction down from the chimese supermarket. Warden was just about to ticket it but noticed it was parked right across the bike lane so just let him off.

I made the bit about the warden up. I am not sure how the persistent offenders get away with it, maybe they have hired Pete to keep a look out?

Most people are neutral towards cyclists. Only those with a bee in their bonnets are as consistently anti cycling as the double yellow line bike lane parkers are about flouting the law.

Many people will pass a hurtful remark but this is just what people do, it is not a cnsistent bias against cycling.

I know it is hard to remain calm in the face of bad drivers who then give you an earful but I do not think they are typical. There are many more bike friendly drivers out there. Non illegitimus carborundum

Causewayside? I have seen, on multiple occasions, traffic wardens pass straight past illegally parked cars there as they go from KB to the Tesco at the top of Causewayside. It turns out that the sign detailing loading times didn't match the lines on the road, which may have been why they weren't enforcing it. The sign is now apparently fixed (I haven't checked it myself), so that's not an excuse anymore.

Yeah @frenchy the total quality bike corridor through causewayside. Can be OK up to fountain hall junction. After that until meadows full of cars and vans parked on double yellow. You would assume wardens could be issuing tickets with abandon.

Indeed. In fact, in 40 days over May and June this year, wardens visited Ratcliffe Terrace 214 times and issued 12 tickets. The main factor with low ticketing rates is that drivers are given a short "observation period" to determine if loading is in fact taking place (5 mins for private vehicles, 10 minutes for commercial apparently).

@frenchy yes and this window allows them to come out of the shop and move their vehicles. See also roseburn tce

Here's two back to the future technical solutions to turnover of 'loading' spaces

    1) Window clocks
Your observation window is 10 mins after your clock time after which you can be ticketed instantly, unless the warden can see you physically loading, in which case the warden can grant you a 30 minute extension ticket.

Tickets for 'clock feeding' able to be issued through conventional longer observation along the length of the whole street.

    2) Metered free loading

Virtual meters like this at every loading bay

SMS your registration plate to the meter for 15 mins free parking/loading, no return 60. Regular users able to register with a phone/tablet app for use city wide - this would be greatly valued by parcel van drivers. Maybe technically possible with the existing ringgo contract. Each bay in a row networked together to prevent space hopping. Same rule with wardens able to grant extensions if justified at the kerbside.

"People, i.e.. drivers, don't like cyclists."

The problem is, that if people go around repeating this mantra, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

It's just lived experience. Anecdotal maybe, but "truth" often is.
