I've had a query from an inexperienced cyclist. They cycle from the Meadows to Heriot Watt along the canal and wonder what that is going to be like in winter.

For myself I dodge the canal because it's so narrow & I'd take the Balgreen route to Edinburgh Park & then the fragmented way to Heriot Watt. But on checking the Spokes map it's a hard one to follow after Edinburgh Park. Any other ideas.

Just need to get your bearings after Edinburgh park, find the route under bypass then out to gogar station road and up to hermiston.

Several on here use canal path in winter with or without studs?

The canal path from Foutainbridge out to at least Craiglockhart is overshadowed for most of the day. If it's frosty it's slow to melt if at all. Canal path has led studs marking the edge on both sides but if there's snow they don't really show through.

Watch out for pedestrians though walking in the pitch black with no lights (ie ME)

Co-worker used to cycle in every day along the canal from Broxburn. Only time he said he wouldn't come in was if the snow was above the crank.

    Studded tyres are the answer
