I think I have had enough of Scotland Street. I usually avoid it on the way up from Tesco into town, but heading down hill from Dublin St my mudguards are braking with more regular occurence.

After the 3rd time in a 7 day period, I had to fashion a new L bracket for the read mudgaurd again yesterday after work.

Why any sane 'cycle expert' would be happy recomending Scotland Street cobbled street as something anyone would want to cycle on, is beyond me!

Last week I looked on as a cyclist overtook me cycling down Scotland Street ON THE PATH!! I can see why now. It doesn't make it any safer!

Is this your shiny metal mudguards, Dave? I too had a pair of those eaten up and shaken to pieces by Edinburgh's road surfaces.

Yes, I'm in the process of changing the rubbish Aluminium stays over to Zefal steel stays, which flex. I was wondering if moving from Plastic SKS to Stainless shineyness was a good move but thay are still in good shape, a year on (and more) and it is only the read which has suffered. Perhaps need a hybrid of SS front and SKS rear guards?

I had the ones with the hammer-finish. Unfortunately this effect creates stress lines in the metal and they quickly split apart where the holes were drilled to mount. The first pair were swapped by the supplier, the second lasted a bit longer as I put in 2 holes and lots of rubber to go with the supplier leather washers but eventually suffered same fate despite much bodging.

I suppose it's alright if you're on a fat tyred MTB or hybrid. Even some tourers would be fine with tyres of 35mm or more. Probably a bit too bone shaking on anything narrower than 32mm...

Short travel suspension forks.....I wouldn't ride Edinburgh without one.

I used some of this to fashion my stays as the SKS ones weren't long enough - I wonder if just buying a load of it would be cost-effective:
