Just as safe as any other helmet, ie not very except in certain specific circumstances (said by a helmet wearer)

    "Let's make cyclists look ridiculous"

"That'll discourage them from getting in my way"

Ms Shiffer came up with the idea for the helmet when studying abroad in Tokyo and at Imperial College London, saying she found the idea of riding a bike in a foreign city without a helmet terrifying, and ended up spending money on buying new helmets when she used bike share schemes.

Victim blaming, by the victim. All part of the grand plan I suppose.

Looks like a not-yet-fully-unfurled Xmas decoration from the 1970s.

Design fail. At least in terms of style.

@crowriver I thought the same about the Xmas decoration & rather like it.

I do wish cycle helmets looked like World War I Flying Ace helmets.

That's right. Aviatrixes like Amy Johnson who wore that kind of headgear looked dead cool.

Given the nature of impacts in flight crashes, why are they not suitable for cycling?

I'm not sure a leather flying helmet really offers that much physical protection from anything.

It's real purpose was to confer protection from the elements, as aircraft were first open and then for a long time, unpressurised and draughty. It was also a handy way of attaching microphones, headsets and oxygen masks to your face. It may have offered slight "bump" protection in turbulence or in the event of having to bail out.

There a chap I see now and again cycling on the Restlarig path who wears an old Russian air crew helmet, like the above, but made from quilted canvas (like the Russian tanker's helmet, but a bit less padded, and olive green, not black). I had a chat with him once and I think he said he kept a studio down at Portobello so I assumed he was some sort of artist.

What happens with the paper helmet when it turns to pulp in the rain?

Those blasted furrenners again! How dare they terrify designers like that.

P.S.:- I prefer the beret in that video. Much more practical.

@kaputnik it alludes to a wax waterproofing treatment for the rainy days.

Flying hats are perhaps to help the wearer not gouge large chunks of scalp off on sharp bits of aeroplane? I had to retrieve a child from a mosquito cockpit in July and could have done with a little skull-padding.

    @chdot. Those are cool.

Also, how about horse-riding hats, in fact the full jodphurs, stock, jacket, whip, dressage gear? These feature in erotic fantasies (see Jilly Cooper on this) and should do much to raise the desirability of cyclists..

"should do much to raise the desirability of cyclists"

    Is that a problem??

    Or maybe you mean cycling?!

@chdot - Cycling gear is intrinsically hideous.

I did see a woman in an elegant camel hair coat and black boots pedalling along Shandwick Place the other day. She looked great.

@chdot - If non cycling passers by enjoyed the sight of cyclists in cavalry uniform pedalling by that would then raise the image of cycling.

Interesting. I find the idea of riding a bike in a foreign city liberating.

I don't think the two are mutually exclusive.

    Whoah! Steady on, Rosie! :-)

"the sight of cyclists in cavalry uniform pedalling by"

Tally Ho! Wait until you see the whites of their eyes before drawing your sabre.

I still say that beret is a good thing to wear. Especially in this weather.

    Mostly.

"If non cycling passers by enjoyed the sight of cyclists in cavalry uniform pedalling by that would then raise the image of cycling"

Somehow I don't think that would be the consequence...

jodphur-style leggings, with seams down front/back of leg and reinforced gusset, cropped riding-style jackets (tweed or cord with contrasting elbow patches) and riding-style boots are fairly common ladieswear around parts of town. Including my office on a Friday.

@crowriver - A charge of those guys down Roseburn Terrace would soon get that infrastructure built.
