North Yorkshire Police Traffic Constable Dan Hughes and his colleagues use intelligence, automatic number plate recognition technology and sometimes luck to track down offenders.
"There are disqualified drivers out there who will pay no regard whatsoever to the law and the justice system, and if they are told they are disqualified they will just flout that without blinking an eye," he said.
"I came across a person just a couple of weeks ago - I was dealing with him for other offences as well as driving while disqualified. He was disqualified six times over already.
"People who drive while disqualified will keep getting disqualified."
Why? Because disqualifying them worked so well last time?
How about confiscating their cars, fining them a few grand, and slapping them with a couple of hundred hours of community service?

What happens when you are banned anyway? If you're the sole user of your car is it forcibly SORNed? (Sounds painful.) I'm sure I've heard of some people who'll walk straight out of the court where they received their ban and attempt to drive home.

In Russia, banned drivers have feet cut off.

"Darryl Lovie, defending, stressed that his client had not committed a similar offence [driving after being banned] before."
You have to be pretty brazen to make a defence like that.

It's a simple case of risk v reward. If penalties are weak and chance of getting caught is low, people will drive while banned.

No jail for woman who drove from court after ban
18 month ban and 160 hours unpaid community work order.
So by my reckoning she's been out on the roads in her Audi today...

I struggle to comprehend how "offending the court's dignity" in person whether through naughty words or not standing and genuflecting towards his Lordship's ring or whatever, will lead to instant chokey, do not pass go, do not collect £200, while leaving court and instantly scofflawing the court's sentence leads to, erm, a ever-so-slightly harder tap of the wrists?
