  1. I'll soon be in the market for a new bike carrier and wondered if anyone here has had experiences of any particular model.

I'm too short to comfortably use the roof mounted ones (I might be selling 3 soon) and the towball option is too expensive. As its a company car, only dealer fitted accessories are allowed and the dealer wants nearly a grand to fit a towball and electrics!

So, the rear mounted thing looks like my only option. Any advice/recommendations?

I have a Saris Bones 3 bike carrier. Easy to fit and very sturdy. Really impressed with the design and build quality.

Downsides - the buckles that hold the bikes are a bit fiddly to use, it struggles a bit with small or unusual shaped bikes (though I have had the kids bikes on there) and it's expensive.

I'm in Porty/Duddingston if you want to take a look at it sometime, or borrow for a try out.

I use roof mounted carriers as well, and often a roofbox. I'm not tall and have higher people carrier type car so I bought a small folding step which lives in the boot and makes it easy to load/unload.

I've had a Revolution Shuttle for about eleven years. No bikes have ever fallen off it and it doesn't do any damage to the rear door or window.

I rate the Thule roof carrier very highly. Pricey, but so solid and fail-safe. If the folding step thing works - great option.

Only thing went wrong so far was the decapitation of a greater spotted woodpecker which flew into it at Birnam. So sad.

  5. Cheers all.

The saris carriers do look the part I must say. I am tempted to at least invest in their solo, as often its just my bike needing carried.

@urchaidh ta for a very kind offer. Might take you up on that!

We go a Saris Bones 3 and drove all the way down to the France with the Helios and another bike on it, over the Summer.

One thing to note, is that it's worth checking the Saris website for the recommended setup for your car, for our setup we replaced two of the pairs of hooks with Hatch Huggers and I think this eliminates most of the problems that I've see reported with the hooks.

A colleague from work is wanting to sell a Witter tow bar mounted rack and a Thule roof rack plus cycle carriers. Price apparently reasonable. Let me know if interested and I can get more details.

I am interested in roof mounted options to buy if anyone is selling. PM me please?

One thing I would recommend for rear mounted carriers is make sure they do not block the lights and licence plate as you will need to get a trailer bar with extra lights and electrics wired up or you are breaking the law. Licence plate printing is not simple either you have to take V5(?) form with you to get one so there is no chance you are nicking a car.
All the above means I have not used the one my dad bought for us as we were waiting until we replace the car (now not next month as it chose to die on the M9 last night) and see what electrics are available with a new estate.
Irritates me every time I see that on the roads and gets my blood boiling at centre parcs
