Neil Greig, the policy director of the IAM RoadSmart motoring group, said public transport must become a more attractive alternative to drivers sitting in queues.

He said: “Nearly all of the congestion black spots have substantial public transport alternatives available, but they have clearly failed to attract car users out of their vehicles.

“For as long as our buses and trains continue to be overcrowded, unreliable, uncomfortable, slow and expensive, drivers will be tempted to sit tight in the daily grind.

A true statement. But isn't this the same Neil Greig who constantly undermines investment in alternatives (cycling, mass transit, whatever) if there's a whiff of inconvenience to Mr Toad?

    The very one.

    Alternative wording:

"For as long as our government continues to subsidise driving and associated infrastructure so that it is made more convenient and unfairly cheap at the point of use, and underfund public transport to the extent that buses and trains are overcrowded, unreliable, uncomfortable, slow and expensive, drivers will be tempted to sit tight in the daily grind."

Why is it that slow, uncomfortable, overcrowded and unreliable are the down sides of public transport but not private car ownership? Is a traffic jam any less overcrowded just because there is a 5m gap between you and the physical person in front - even if the gap between vehicles is is measured in cm?

The Scottish Government is wedded to transport policies which pull primarily in the wrong direction as regards climate. Expenditure on motorways and trunk roads is high and rising, with rail funding down in the draft 16/17 budget and active travel investment (i.e. cycling and walking) stuck below 2% of total transport spending.

Report says that Aberdeen has average speeds of 5.5 mph in rush hour. I thought 12 was the 'norm'?

TomTom’s findings pinpointed the westbound carriageway of the city bypass approaching Sheriffhall roundabout as the Capital’s most gridlocked road.

The Evening News reported in December how congestion-busting plans at Sheriffhall include tearing up the Capital’s “worst roundabout” and allowing the bypass to pass straight through.

Tony Kenmuir, chairman of Central Taxis, said his firm’s drivers were able to navigate through the worst jams by using bus lanes.

“I think the city does a good job of keeping public transport moving,” added Mr Kenmuir. “Rather than use private cars, if people want to get about, they’re probably better on public transport.”
