Irish TDs are trying to introduce a minimum passing distance law. 1 m when the speed limit is below 50 kmph (30 mph), 1.5 m at higher speeds. €80 fine and penalty points, with stiffer penalties if it finds its way to court.

These laws seem to be controversial among cyclists, but I think they're an obvious improvement, and it's great just to see politicians actually caring.

10% of Irish national transport budget to be allocated to cycling.

Is there an Irish Sustrans running competitions for funding and commissioning sculptures? Or will they just get digging?

As much as we might complain about sustrans funding it's the council's dragging their heels which is more of a problem. The fact that their heels are nailed to the tarmac by the consultation and TRO process is possibly an even bigger concern for us.

We need the funding but we also need the legal ability for it to be spent without a single individual stopping it.

Also we need councils that are properly funded, in general, by central government so they are not so cash strapped and under-resourced. Because of chronic long-term underfunding, they are struggling to cope with the basics, never mind modifying the status quo.

Hence this year's Pop-up Pops. Take the battle to the local authorities if they're dragging their heels, or give them the love/support they need to be courageous if their hearts are in the right place.

I also agree with acsimpson about the TRO process.

It needs to be streamlined in favour of active travel projects, with the existing controls only remaining in place for projects benefiting motorised users.

This is one of the strengths of the default 20mph limit bill - the onus is on arguing that a road should be 30mph rather than 20mph. Puts the burden of proof on the more damaging option

“the onus is on arguing that a road should be 30mph rather than 20mph”

That’ll keep Cllr Cook busy -

Or does it mean bill won’t pass?

we might complain about sustrans funding it's the council's dragging their heels which is more of a problem. - I've heard that some council officers are stopping asking sustrans for matched funding because the conditions that sustrans insist on cause more delays and costs than they are worth.

Cllr Andrew Johnson: Today we find out how the SNP-Lab administration running Edinburgh plan to deliver c£48 million of cuts this year. Given millions of last year’s cuts remain undelivered, the situation is grave. The ScotGov is failing to fund local gov properly

Kezia: Just met with @cllrcammyday to discuss what £47million worth of cuts to Edinburgh’s council budget means in practice - horrendous decisions ahead all because of SNP’s consistent failure to properly fund our city’s public services

Seems problem in Edinburgh (instead or as well?) is that officers/resources are being concentrated on bigger/Sustrans funded schemes leaving other ones that should have been progressed/finished years ago stuck in limbo.
