Some of you will be aware that bike parking on George Square is over-subscribed - even in February and March. I had for some months been locking my folder on the outside of a bit of railing that I thought was out of everyone's way. But then some other folk started locking their full size bikes to the stair side of the railing (which makes it a little dfficult to reach the railing - except technically it's more like a fence, than a rialing - designed to keep people from falling, not to help you up and down the stairs). but anyway, I thought this was inconsiderate and have been mostly locking my bike elsewhere - no easy feat unless you arrive at 8am.

Tonight, as I left on my bike, I saw a guy fiddling with a fancy mud-guard on this inauspiciously parked road bike. it looked odd, so I said 'excuse me, is that your bike'. to which he replied yes. Then, when i questioned this, he went off on a rant about people leaving bikes in public places meant it was now public property. Meanwhile he ripped off the mud guard, told me to leave him alone, that he was having a bad day and walked off, still giving me grief.

I should have taken a picture of him, but I was feeling more than a bit intimidated.

He had what sounded to me like an irish accent, very close-cropped hair, neat clothes, and a cap. He implied he worked at the uni, but I'd never seen him before.

It was a very odd encounter. I'll be parking my bike well out of the way. I don't think he was looking at it, but you never know. I'll also mention it to security.

There's plenty oddballs about @SRD. Today alone I had a pensioner pretend to machine gun me with his aluminium NHS walking stick (I shot him in the face with forefinger and thumb, to his great delight) and I also had a junkie offer to look after my bike outside the Newington Sainsburys while I shopped and I told him no I'd look after his dog while he shopped and that freaked him most of the way out.

It's possible that he was having a bad day; life can be stressful and unfortunately he verbally took it out on you.

Meanwhile two bicycle related observations about the George Square area are, that there are a lot of abandoned bikes chained up taking space, and, can't the university supply more stands to meet the bicycle demand? Bikestation could benefit from the former, and students and staff would benefit from the latter.

@ih -no, he took it out on someone else's poorly parked bike

I regularly email security and ask them to remove abandoned bikes. I've also been campaigining for new racks. they put several dozen (maybe hundreds) in last summer. but more are needed.

What are the normal responses when you ask them to remove abandoned bikes/install more racks?

How's the secure bike parking around George Square?

EDIT: Also, that sounds like incredibly dodgy behaviour, well done on doing something about it. Someone lost a mudguard, but they might have lost the rest of the bike!

Secure parking is okay, but not great. the lockup nearest my work is a pain to get to.

Security removes bikes periodically, but not often enough.

They acknowledge need for more racks, but bike usage really seems to outstrip rack installation. I've never struggled to find a rack in Jan/feb before, and i did this year, despite all the new racks that went in.

Yes, it's pretty dire this year, but especially since the secure shelter at Potterrow was demolished to make way for the new wing of the Informatics Forum. The replacement is meant to be the basement of the old business school, but someone thought it'd be a great idea to not have swipe card access but instead just a lock that you have to email to get the code for (and not even a notice saying where to get the code!), so it's poorly used (plus, getting inside is a faff as Marshall Street is closed and access from Bristo Sq is all pedestrians and fences).
