Interestingly, this junction is being replaced with new specs. Looks like it wil be a proper 'table' so no kerbs. But also red chip tarmac for the whole thing.
I've not seen that before. any idea what the significance is?
CityCyclingEdinburgh was launched on the 27th of October 2009 as "an experiment".
IT’S TRUE!

Well done to ALL posters
It soon became useful and entertaining. There are regular posters, people who add useful info occasionally and plenty more who drop by to watch. That's fine. If you want to add news/comments it's easy to register and become a member.

I also noticed the 'red chip' tarmac all over the junction.
My initial reaction was, "That's going to further devalue the red chip cycle lanes and cause confusion"
I believed the raised table was supposed to be of brick pavers as elsewhere in the area. Guessing the tarmac is a time and cost saving method. I give it a year before it's badly rutted.

Should have posted here... anyway it's now open at least.
I noticed it was red chip too.
Return of red ASLs in Edinburgh? by LaidBackBikes, on Flickr
I happened to walk this way today and the junction caught my attention. The entire thing being raised is really quite nice though seems weird it's red chipped.
But the thing I found most interesting is the red surfaced line in the distance of Fountainbridge's first photo. It's between the main intersection and the pedestrian crossing on the south arm of the junction only. The only thing I can think of is that's a zone for a two stage right between Gilmore Place and Viewforth north to the new Boroughmuir.
Can anyone else think what it is? I wouldn't really have thought this junction would end up being Edinburgh's first two stage right!
I hope the new lights retain the old very subtly traffic calming timings.
After about 9pm at night they would sit on 'all red' until a vehicle approached. You didn't need to slow down a lot, but an ease up from 30 was needed.
I rolled along Gilmore Place in traffic this morn en route to craigmillar.
THe next two roads heading east on RHS have red strip rightr across the road with two wee white arrows pointing south. ONe way maybe
I have been cycling through there twice a day and never noticed the red chips (until I saw this thread)!
The Temporary lights there at the moment have quite a long cycle on them, but good to see them have a pedestrian crossing setting!
temp lights gone!!!!!! yay!!!
