I'm hoping to make our garage a bit more usable from the mass of bikes it is at the moment. A Sheffield rack would (I think) make storage tidier and bikes more accessible. Looking online a 4 rack one would be £350+ when you add in delivery of £110+VAT. Can anyone suggest a local merchant, or a blacksmith who could make one up in galvanised steel?

The blacksmith next to the laicih pub on Gorgie road at Chesser might do that - he made some amazing snow shovels back when we had snowy winters

If it's inside the garage you could make one out of wood.

You can get individual ones from Cyclehoop for about £35

    So £140 for 4:

LivD If it's in your garage all you need is a vertical pole with some way of preventing the bike being lifted over the top of the pole. I've just looked at the price of scaffold poles and they're about £13 for an 8ft length. You could either put in a pole attached at top and bottom in your garage or attach some kind of cross piece to stop the lifting over the top. With a bit of variation you could adapt the idea for as many bikes as you want. You could save a lot on your £460.

You could perhaps ask your local friendly blacksmith to make a Sheffield stand by bending a scaffolding pole, and then have it carburised to make it harder to cut.

All good ideas, thank you, The cyclehoop vertical rack ones look interesting. I'll have to go and measure the height and width to see what would fit.
Anything requiring much in the way of construction is likely not to happen in the forseeable future. We have so many chores and projects that need to be worked on. I'm hoping for a quick fix.

These are quite good as a cheap way to get bikes to stand up.

I use them for temporary placement (bikes are usually lock with ground and wall anchors) and for stabilising bikes in the car

I have used the X-Tools Wallmount Bike Storage Hanger.

I wasn't going for security but rather just something inexpensive for the lesser used bikes but they would store the bikes in a similar way to the cyclehoop ones.

Getting the bikes up the wall can be a bit of a faff so I wouldn't recommend for every day use.

Yeah, we aren't looking for a secure system, we just have to trust the garage door. Although perhaps we should run a cable through the ones we're not using regularly.

I've hardly ridden a bike in 3years, pregnancy and new motherhood. I'd like to go out more now but my bikes are just buried in a pile. Sorting out wall or floor storage means I could get at my bikes without having to move a load of other.

We have one of these http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/saris-mighty-mite-6-bike-storage-rack/rp-prod39580. Holds 6 bikes so plenty of room for N+1. Can be a wee bit tight getting big MTB tyres.

@fiefster... not bad... but we'd need two (!)
