    Another consultation:

    https://consultationhub.edinburgh.gov.uk/sfc/design-cycle-walk-saughton-park-quietroute-8/

    They've tried to use some before/after pictures. There doesn't appear to be a radical change but will need to look at the plans in detail.

    @Stickman - it looks like a few controlled crossings.

    Pansy Walk has been resurfaced. (Dunno when it happened but noticed it last night).

    Access to the end of the Stenhouse Drive cycle path (currently "Cyclists dismount" - or get onto the road for 100m before turning left) seems to have been addressed in the proposal. (Pages 3 & 5 in the proposed drawings document)

    The continuous footways are very nice and I hope this is going to be a standard feature of Edinburgh improvement works in the future.

    No new ped xing outside the library but I suspect the toucan 'upgrade' will just be a swapping of light filters.

    Nothing to really complain about here, nothing revolutionary, seems to just formalise a route to the park that will be mostly used by kids.

    You'd be surprised how many people come up Saughton Ave W and want to turn right onto the BH path. Thats a very worthwhile upgrade espcially since they seem to be widening the pavement not just sticking paint outside peoples gates.

    Not sure if they're moving the existing crossing on Stevenson Drv to Whitson Crescent or adding a new one.

    Talks about removing the old one, & lining up the new one with the park access, which seems to be a good idea.

    I find Whitson Road with its filtered permeability a very nice alternative to wrangling with traffic and/or peds at Balgreen if going from the direction of Gorgie to the Broomhouse path. Sorting out the access at either end (Balgreen crossing and Stenhouse Dr) makes it even more attractive

    They need to block Pansy Walk to motors beyond the entrance to the Primary School Car Park. At the moment the grass strips are being used as an informal car park for nursery drop offs and the bowling green. Completely ruining the grass and the formerly peaceful nature of the "Walk" (clue is in the name).

    Just posted this on Spokes Facebook. I can't do the photo here so you'll have to see it there.

    CONSULTATION - Saughton Park and the existing QuietRoute 8 at Baird Drive and Stenhouse Drive.

    SPOKES WALK

    Date/time - Thursday 1 June 7:30pm

    Meeting point - At the pedestrian crossing over Stenhouse Drive near the junction with Saughton Mains St (see photo below)

    Spokes is putting a submission for this consultation. Two of us, Euan and Rosie, will be walking the route on Thursday 1 June 7:30pm. You are very welcome to join us. It should take about an hour – hour and a half and we could have a drink somewhere afterwards.

    The purpose behind this is:-

    sharing ideas/dialogue with fellow cyclists

    everyone being better informed making their responses to the Council consultation

    influencing the Spokes response

    We did this for the Roseburn to Canal route and found it very helpful, not to mention agreeable to meet those interested in cycling infrastructure.

    Hi Rosie, I'd like to attend this, time permitting. I've volunteered to respond on behalf of Corstorphine Community Council on this consultation - it's just outside our area but still important for people cycling/walking in the local community. I've looked at plans and need to understand desire lines of users before responding - some of the amends don't make sense to me. Thanks for arranging the walk.

    That was a useful exercise. Examining infrastructure with other people more fruitful than doing it by yourself.

    I knew a little bit of the route as I used to go along Whitson Road and then along the pavement by Stenhouse Drive before the last link of the cycle route by the tram was built, the bit that comes out as Baird Drive. . I kicked myself in retrospect as I didn't know that Pansy Walk is opposite Whitson Road - I only knew it from the other end and use it for the trip along the Water of Leith. So had taken a less pleasant route to get to Whitson Road.

    Anyway the changes proposed look positive. I'd gone to the exhibition and earwigged some locals who seemed enthusiastic about a better route to Saughton Park, Balgreen School and the Library.

    Stenhouse is densely populated and flat. Cycling should be the obvious form of transport for commuters - except when they get off their quiet route after Roseburn Park they have the non quiet routes to the places where folk work in the city centre.

    £500,000 FUNDING FROM SUSTRANS!

    We mentioned in the previous Newsletter that we submitted a grant application for Sustrans ‘Community Links’ funding in February which would allow us to extend the Active Travel Routes in Saughton Park. We are very pleased to now let you know that our bid was successful and we’ve been awarded £500,000.

    This funding will provide a great opportunity to build on local active travel connections and the plans includes upgrades to the path network which will improve and extend cycling and pedestrian routes through the park, improve off-road linkages around the neighbourhood and provide a safe and attractive environment for people who wish to build up their stamina for walking or who wish to develop their cycling proficiency and confidence.

    The work will include:

    • Upgrades to the Main Drive (Sustrans Route) and the Central Path;
    • New paths along the north, south and east boundaries;
    • Improvements at the entrances to make them more pedestrian and cycle friendly;
    • A new entrance to the north-east corner to provide a better link to Balgreen Tram Stop; and
    • Lighting to the main paths, cycle racks, seating, art work and landscape improvements.

    I hate to be negative but is £500k well spent on cycling/walking routes *in a traffic free park* when on-road projects don't get funding?

    I don't have any strong objection, but how much of the M8 upgrade budget was spent on "artwork"?

    Quick Question on this, has the width of the Cycle Lanes been looked at given the mess at Fountain Park?

    LivingStreets have responded thus (summary):

    "While we welcome a number of small-scale improvements, especially the installation of continuous pavements, there is very little enhancement of the walkability of most streets under this proposal. We are disappointed to see yet another scheme proposed which designs-in cycling on pavements; and that the proposals largely seem to ignore the council’s own Street Design Guidance, especially in terms of dealing with narrow pavements and excessively splayed junctions. These issues must be tackled if the scheme is to be credible from a walking perspective. "

    Following the earlier consultation on the route design proposals a consultation report has been completed which summarises the findings of the consultation and the Council’s responses to them. This can now be accessed via the following link;

    https://consultationhub.edinburgh.gov.uk/sfc/design-cycle-walk-saughton-park-quietroute-8/

    Unfortunately due to a current lack of resources this scheme has been placed on hold. We will ensure that you are kept up-to-date with any future developments regarding the scheme.
