Got a boxful of CDs (mostly computer magazine sample software sort of thing.)

I expect they'll be going to the CEC 'civic amenity depot'. They have a "hard plastic" section.

Anyone know if the discs and cases are both hard?

    OR

Does anyone use/want discs for bird scaring (or other things)? Or have a use for the cases?

I don't know the answer. Edinburgh university has a page telling people how to recycle various things which might be useful to some people: http://www.ed.ac.uk/estates/waste-recycling/how

For most things, it says "Stick it in the recyling bin". It confirms that CDs are recyclable, but doesn't say to stick them in a recycling bin, instead listing the contact details of a company in Kilmarnock...

I presume that staff at the depot will know the answer, but you probably don't want to go all the way down there without knowing the answer...

CDs are recyclable, but generally only in industrial quantities. If you had a metric tonne of them then a recycling depot would be interested.

If you interrogate Recycle for Scotland, it says CDs aren't collected for recycling anywhere in Edinburgh or Glasgow. I did find a few results for recycling them in Birmingham, though. Stick them in the grey bin and they will most likely go through the MRF in Broxburn and end up in the pile that goes for incineration.

Almost all of the "brilliant DIY ideas for recycling CDs" means breaking them up and making pretty mosaics with the bits on plates, plantpots and mirror surrounds.

If they're the right sort (open out fully) CD 'jewel cases' can be repurposed to make a nice photo based desk calendar. Print out the pages of your calendar to the right size to fit in a CD case on nice glossy paper and then use the CD case as a stand. Assuming anyone uses paper calendars these days

I might take a few of the CDs for bird/hare scaring purposes, although I'm guessing hares don't scare that easily

Recycling centre, Seafield flavour, question: the CEC website says that

“Only Edinburgh residents in domestic vehicles can use the recycling centres.“

Can I assume they will treat a bike as a domestic vehicle, or will I be turned away for spurious safety reasons?

Never personally had a problem at Craigmillar, which has the same policy. However, I do know someone who was told "No bikes allowed".

I've taken loads to Seafield by bike and staff have been very friendly / helpful.
Took an old cooker with e-bike & bike trailer. Also 200kg of printed stuff on behalf of organisation in city with UA.
They have separate area for batteries and old bulbs / strip light.
E-goods in a big skip. Sure some are minor faults but cheaper to chuck than repair.
Carpet was only failure as it just goes landfill at Seafield as recycling facility burned down.

Only bad thing is having to bump off kerb from Seafield shared use pavement to do right turn. As one way system ywhen you leave you have to re-enter turning left after rail bridge and cycle fast in rare traffic space. Dropped kerb opposite exit would be good although chances of gap in both directions is unlikely.
Usually big queue of cars purging unwanted items at that depot.

I walked in there a couple of years ago, to dispose of a laptop battery, no one stopped me.
