  1. On 21st January I reported (at St Leonard's PS) an incident which had happened the previous evening on my commute home.

I won't bore you with all the details but yesterday the matter was finally closed after I received and accepted a full unconditional apology from the driver.

Its taken a long time but my only real complaint was the initial police error which meant my case wasn't allocated to anyone to deal with. This was only discovered after I lodged a formal complaint.

The main reason for posting however is that the Officer who eventually handled my case was convinced charges would have progressed (irrespective of my views) had CCTV evidence been available. It was city centre and should have been - BUT - I was informed CEC only keep video footage for 2 weeks. By the time the officer got my case, any evidence was already destroyed.

If you ever have an incident you are minded to report, its worth bearing in mind that maybe requesting CCTV footage from CEC early, might help you or the police later.

Good to know, thanks for posting and glad to hear you had a somewhat positive outcome.

Do you know if requesting the CCTV footage is something an individual can do?

  3. I honestly don't know.

I would hope you could at least ask for footage to be kept to allow the police to request. Doesn't seem unreasonable.

At the very least, you have the right to request CCTV footage of yourself: https://www.gov.uk/request-cctv-footage-of-yourself

I was involved in an accident a while back and was shocked at how bad the police were despite saying they would get evidence the only thing they done was get statements from me and the driver for ' insurance purposes'.

Suffice to say when I complained about the lack of action against the driver it came to light they had not bothered with CCTV from LRT which had by then been destroyed.

If anyone has the misfortune to be in an accident request it yourself and do not trust them to do their job!
