    pretty cool - maybe next step (for someone far cleverer than me) would be to weight it by population density.

    I'm assuming "number of postcodes" is a proxy for population density, as these tend to be organised around the number of dwellings. That said, census data should be available, there are even maps of population density. This one courtesy of Wiki, shows North East Scotland poorly served by rail relative to population.

    Cambletown is only 138.77 KMs from the nearest station

    Seems to be based on road distance not 'crow fly', which is obviously good.

    You'd need a correlation of distance from nearest station against population density to really do this right.

    Note the map isn't handling the islands right, plus has some heritage stations (e.g. Deeside).

    I'd assumed this was based on excellent ferry links to train stations? No roads in the sea.
