I discovered this afternoon that George St westbound from Hanover St is closed to all traffic for the duration of the festival, and no cycle route provided. Anything known about this?

It's déjà vu all over again.

Can't complain to Lesley Hinds anymore.
I wonder how the new Lesley will react.

The plan was for westbound cyclists to go along a cycle lane on the north side of the street. This could, of course, have changed. Any chance it was fully closed temporarily as they set up?

You should ask that Tory councillor who said there was a perfectly good cycle lane on George St and cyclists should use that, rather than use the Frasers Junction of Death.

For the whole of the festival?
So, basically taking out one of the routes I use almost daily to avoid tram track hell on Princes St, for literally weeks at a time?Posted 7 years ago # -

GEORGE STREET City Centre
Festival events. Road closed between Charlotte Square and Castle Street and westbound Hanover Street to Frederick Street. Except for cyclists. Loading permitted on south side 6am - 9.30am each day.
Start: 30-Jul-2017 00:01
End: 28-Aug-2017 13:00"
There's supposed to be cyclist exception but as usual I expect we have to fight for it on the ground.

It's closed for the entire length of the Assembly Rooms block westbound, no space for cycling. No way past except to push down pavement. Space being used to erect some sort of large geodesic tent but mainly for portakabins, equipment containers and contractors vehicles. I assume all the pop-up craft gin and Drambuie bars are to follow.
The westernmost block (Castle Street to Charlotte Square) has a nice wide contraflow lane on south side of street.
Access from Charlotte Square is possible, even though the right turn filter lane has been blocked by the big sign saying "ROAD CLOSED EXCEPT CYCLISTS". Hashtag facepalm.

There was cycling access reinstalled from Castle street-Charlotte Square block. Perhaps access will be reinstalled upon completion of large dome. I was pretty surprised as I've not seen anything on the road closure website or any signage up announcing a TRO.

in better news, at the moment due to George Sq construction of the Underbelly Festival there is no parking so cycling through that way to the meadows is nice. Obviously, once rammed with people who will laugh at anything it will be less nice.

Tweet from "Essential Edinburgh" (who manage the CBD area) claims a diversion is in place and signed today, let's hope it's not along Hill Street against the 1-way traffic this year...
They also suggest it will be re-opened to through cycling once the works have completed to turn it into Festival Central.

There's a sort of route now - much like last year, along the northern edge of the centre cobbles. But it's difficult to get on to from Hanover St as the barriers are closed.

I was just there this evening and saw no cycle lane. Where is it meant to be?? Am I being stupid? (probably)

@glitterpossum - I've not been there myself, so don't know for sure, but the westbound cycle lane was supposed to be on the north side of the road between Hanover St and Frederick St, although it is accessed from the South side of the road.
Perhaps an ASCII diagram would help:

...perhaps not.

Westbound: Hanover to Frederick is over the opposite side of the cobble-parking. Castle to Charlotte is along the normal roadway. The large truck delivering intoxicants which was blocking the end of Frederick Street from kerb to kerb is presumably temporary.
The sign at the east end of the westbound lane at Hanover Street is vague, but you go through the barriers then to the right of the diagonal hoarding, diagonally over the cobbles, watching out for large stacks of rolls of roofing-felt.

To paraphrase Airplane!, looks like I picked the right week to stop commuting George Street.
Posted 7 years ago # -
I only went along it today to see what was happening and if Hill or Thistle Streets were involved.
I only need-ish to go along it (or somewhere parallel) once every month or so when I'm on the early rota. If I go home that way it's never because I'm in a rush, but I'll start avoiding it both ways if it looks like there'll be a risk of a narrow channel containing broken glass once all the pop-up artisanal gin distilleries are fully operational. There's also the risk of feeling compelled to kick barriers back to where they should be when they creep, which can cause further delays in the morning.

Is the 'cycle' lane suitable for trikers and torpedists? If not, it's not good enough.
Posted 7 years ago # -
Not this morning - insufficient gap between the barriers at the Hanover Street end, insufficient space to pass another along the cobbleway and too many drink-delivery trucks at the Frederick Street end, unless the tricyclist/betrailerèd/velomobilicular were sufficiently able-bodied to do some kerb-hoicking (or possibly use the pelican crossings' dropped kerbs).

We cannot promise that Spokes can respond rapidly to any immediate feedback during the Festival – we are all volunteers! – but anyone experiencing serious problems should email the senior project manager, Grant Stewart grants@essentialedinburgh.co.uk.

MORE than £500,000 worth of parking fines were slapped on cars in George Street last year, the most of any road in the Capital.
“
Posted 7 years ago # -
The fines are clearly too low, if they are not deterring people from risking a fine
Posted 7 years ago # -
@nedd1e_h the people are too rich? In FInland allegedl;y Nokia owbner finerd £100,000 (finnish) for speeding. tjat is £60 to you or me?
Posted 7 years ago # -
@gembo
Yes, fines should be a certain % of your monthly income, also with a minimum fine.
Posted 7 years ago # -
Festival organisers have had some communication with Spokes re cycling arrangements proposed during this year's Festival. More info soon.
Also, re the fines, some parts of town it is cheaper to pay a daily fine than to pay to park daily - so a plasterer working on McDonald's told me he does!Posted 7 years ago #
