The researcher asserts she has shifted as her initial work was keen to not look at infrastructure. Would be good if she was more explicit in saying that infrastructure is the base and the rest is superstructure.

Interesting papers but possible to use them to deflect the debate away from building the infrastructure. Ian Walker looked at hi-viz, POLITE etc but his big conclusion is build the infrastructure.

@CyclingEdin Multiple interpretations always possible... do feel/hope my work has helped contribute to a new consensus(ish) that infra crucial tho.

Thanks for this clarification - CHdot/Rachel? There does now seem to be a consensus(ish) that infra crucial. Good term consensus (ish). You are more explicit here in this thread than I picked up in your handy summary of your research. Though I should maybe read it more carefully than I did whilst eating my porridge.

Ian Walker is very definitive now in his view that the appearance of the cyclist has no effect on driver behaviour. Indeed you quote the commuter saying you ride as if all other road users are incompetent (sorry I paraphrase). I think this is very sound advice and also the Must Get In Front description of drivers behaviour. Not all drivers. There is considerate driving out there. Maybe these drivers are cyclists too.

Clearly his earlier work was designed to see if appearance could change driver behaviour and he thought he had found some evidence for this but on further testing concludes not and argues powerfully for segregated infrastructure.
