People would be amazed if you told them they did not own the road outside their house. Iin the suburbs this is taken for granted and it would be exceptionally bad form if someone started parking their car outside your house.
Nothing to stop them doing that. Apart from etiquette.

i think the underscores in the title are creating one 80 character long word and creating havoc with the formatting.
that aside - yes, great article.

Dear admin. Is there any chance of taking one underscore out of the thread title because the (effective) single word is messing up my display.
As for the article I thought it very good, and the small number of comments generally quite sensible!
Parking is the scourge of today's urban travel. I sometimes list in my mind all the problems caused by on street parking. In Edinburgh the roads are frequently wide, and without street parking there would be ample space for wide cycle lanes that, although not fully segregated, would hugely improve safety and comfort and quickly allow the establishment of a genuine cycling network. Cycling numbers would increase quickly which in turn would promote fully segregated routes where they are necessary.

Ooooooops.
Format is OK here. Don't think I can change it.
I'm busy watching Kirk fight a Gorn on Cestus III so I just copy and pasted it.

I like the way the parking story has taken up all the space.

Once the new St James Centre is built there will be so many off-street parking spaces available that they'll be able to take away most of the on-street parking in the city centre (if Edinburgh was an enlightened European city with coordinated plans to make the city liveable).

Good piece. Harrison Road often goes into one way mode because of the parked cars. I mutter about this on my commute - that if those metal boxes weren't sitting there we could all be moving without impediment. I don't know if the drivers are muttering as well, or whether they have fellow feeling with the parkers.

@Rosie I suspect it doesn't register with the drivers because a) they are part of the problem, and b) it is now considered such an inalienable right to take up public space with their personal property that they can't conceive of the congestion it produces.
My only hope for the future is that autonomous vehicles will lead to the realisation that privately owned cars are largely unnecessary.
