After today's ride suggestions that it might be a good idea to repeat, monthly, weekly or even daily!

The world didn't collapse without the motor traffic.

Even some evidence that businesses along the route might benefit.

    Significant proportion of food/drink outlets.

Of course, as elsewhere, would be good to encourage skaters, bladers etc.

I have a seven year old who would quite willingly be the spokesperson. He's had a personal campaign since he was five to close roads to vehicles at a minimum of once a month. Today, he was euphoric.

I suggested as much to the one 'official' person i saw - a council employee who rides an elephant bike. can't recall if he ever posts here.

I'd love it. The OH and I were discussing exactly this as we sat on the Meadows watching all the bikes go by. It could be moved around other areas so no residents are being bothered by it every month. Imagine the scenes if they closed Porty High Street etc to cars for the afternoon. But on, say, a mild Spring day I bet the tills would be ringing more than usual.

    Certainly for it.
The Festival is crying out for a green corridor into city along George IV into city. We then would promote integration of cycling and walking jointly. No fences / logos required and break down the perception that one section of population is from different tribe etc.

Parking is still free on a Sunday pm. Is the city centre quiet on a Sunday? I'd aim for every Sunday? Buses being rerouted might need some detail? How often does Paris do this now?

But then I think medieval and Georgian Edinburgh city centre should be car free every day.

If Melville Drive gets closed again, then I will be using my car to operate a guerrilla rolling road block on my street, to prevent 40mph rat-running.

What gembo said. The WHS should be largely pedestrianised. Absurd that it's rammed with cars on a daily basis.

*By pedestrianised I also mean that it would allow responsible cycling, as all such areas do elsewhere in Europe.

Got a bit of Twitter traction from a video yesterday:

A 7 year old gets to cycle up the Royal Mile without cars. Let's make this normal every month @Edinburgh_CC @davidfkeySNP @SteveAMBurgess
Response from @SteveAMBurgess (Transport committee) "Yes - could be a play street once a month. And what about making it permanent!"

"I have a seven year old who would quite willingly be the spokesperson"

    Better start the campaign then...

Sounds good. I'll bring it up again with Chas (and the other Green Councillors) when I have the opportunity.

A seven year old spokesperson would be amazing!

Also, yes please, a reguarly car free city centre would be glorious. (I'd voluntarily cycle around the city centre a lot more - right now I cycle through it to get to other, less horrible on a bike, places.)

    So, how do we start?
Get weezee junior to start a petition? (Do you have to be over 18 to start an online one?)
All write to our councillors? Anything else?

    "All write to our councillors?"

And key ones like 'cycling champion'.

Think key thing is to get 'good idea, great event, needs to be regular', out there.

    "Anything else?"

Start informal group of people, mix of CCEers, Playing Out people and 7 year olds.

Need some 'evidence' - ask if the cafes did well on Sunday (soon, before they forget).

I'll ask the seven year old when he gets home from school.

I'll also bring this up at the next Edinburgh Playing Out meeting in a couple of weeks. One of the key principles of playing out is no structured activities - just close the road and let kids get on with it. I'd propose it should be same for all ages...

My original Twitter video from Sunday suggesting this should be every month got over 100 likes within 24 hours. There certainly is support for this.

This evening on BBC2 was "World's Busiest Cities" covering Mexico City. There was a short section about the closure of one of the main streets every Sunday for cycling.

If they can do it then why can't we here?

    It's a question I asked on Twitter

Got a bit of push back, but also a lot of likes and RTs

    "Start informal group of people"

The seven year old says yes, he's up for it. And so am I.

Can we share tasks now or should we meet face-to-face first?

    e.g.
"Need some 'evidence' - ask if the cafes did well on Sunday (soon, before they forget)."

Maybe a few of us could gather feedback from cafes over this weekend?

"Maybe a few of us could gather feedback from cafes over this weekend?"

Surely you're NOT suggesting that CCE people meet in cafes!?

Do people have to bring their own 7yo?

"Surely you're NOT suggesting that CCE people meet in cafes!?"

Of course not, CCErs are fuelled by fresh fumes and adrenaline. Never any bean-based beverages.

"Do people have to bring their own 7yo?"

I have a spare 7yo you can borrow.
