Sewer Replacement - Haymarket Terrace eastbound to close

Haymarket Terrace is going to be closed to eastbound traffic for 6 months commencing Saturday 7th October.

The construction area goes from Magdela Cres. all the way along to the pedestrian crossing outside the station.

The eastbound diversion is up Magdela to Eglinton Crescent then down Palmerston Place. They are going to run it like this for a week to see how it goes but if it doesn't work well (particularly for the buses), instead of a right turn into Palmerston Place they will turn left then go round in a circle on Rothesay Place, Manor Place and Chester St.

Apparently there is "no room" for an eastbound cyclists' contraflow...

What's the story going to be with Haymarket Yards?

What's the story going to be with Haymarket Yards?

If heading East, turn left (i.e. West), head in the opposite direction for a bit, then turn right up Magdela Cres.

    Don't shoot the messenger...

Haymarket Terrace now closed off and it's a bit of a mess. If you don't fancy the diversion up Magdala then you'll need to dismount at either end as it's all fenced off. Possible to cycle through the cones in between. You can still come out of Haymarket Yards and through the cones but will need to dismount outside the station.

I saw a tweet this morning saying the diversion is adding 10 minutes to bus journeys.

Given all the roadworks going on in the city centre .... Haymarket, Leith St, Leith Walk - I also encountered some at Gorgie/Dalry junction and Ferry Rd/Clark Rd over the weekend - there's probably never been a better time to be a cyclist.

I was on the very early Airlink this morning after a drop-off at the airport and even on totally empty streets it adds a good couple of minutes. Incidentally the cyclist my bus was following (in a completely exemplary manner, I hasten to add) just went onto the pavement to get round the diversion. Expect more of this with consequent EEN verbiage?

I cycled that way this morning as it's usually my quickest route. Loads of motorised vehicles going up Magdala Crescent so skipped that, walked part of the way on the pavement and then cycled to and up Rosebery Crescent. Others not so scrupulous about walking on pavement.

Waiting at Palmeerston Place saw fleets of cycles passing along Shandwick Plac - probably not that many however minus the cars they seemed numerous.

Coming back this evening was almost pleasant. Haymarket interchange is usually hideous, but only one bus and almost no cars. Brilliant.

I travelled West this eve, and hadn't appreaciated that after negotiating the "Haymarket Wiggle" (for want of better name) it funnels cyclists into left hand side of a single traffic lane.

So are cars heading west meant to slow down and give way to bikes negotiating the "wiggle"?

Or are cyclists using the "wiggle" meant to stop and give way to motor traffic?

Luckily it wasn't too busy at 6.30pm, but am wondering how I should negotiate this next time.

I predict plenty of opportunity for accidents especially if cyclists don't realise that they need to give way/take particular care here, and also if motor vehicles don't see any need to give way either.

    All seems rather dangerous.

@jules878 - thanks for the warning about the lane at the station. Sounds awkward.

Lots of "Cyclists Dismount" signs up this morning.

Ah ok. Well not ok, but at least not as dangerous as last night.

There were definitely no "cyclists dismount" signs last night and thankfully not busy.

WHY/where are cyclists supposed to dismount?

On a bit of road where cars are allowed to drive??

The signs are on the pavement at Magdala Crescent and then further on where the road is completely blocked and it's not possible to cycle through the cones.

I saw a few pavement cyclists yesterday so probably to try to dissuade them.

There were also a few workmen handing out information leaflets about the closure, including to a woman who was pushing her bike & child trailer along the pavement.

I had a look at the new layout outside the station that @jules878 described above. It's really bad - there's going to be an incidentnt very soon. The painted lane now directs you straight back into a live stream of traffic that's coming from behind, whilst crossing the tram tracks.

I'll be using the station drop-off lane instead.

Thanks Ned! Pictures make it much more clear than my attempt to explain in words.

Looks like no change from last night, except it's busier during the day.

How long before a traffic incident occurs? (Won't be an "accident" though, because design is deliberately dangerous).

Came home an alternative route - Fountainbridge, Gibson Terrace, Canal, Harrison Road. Hoaching with cyclists.

Can confirm, it's just the same. Airlink driver waved me through and left plenty space, but an utterly hideous state of affairs.

Why is there no eastbound cycle facility? How do you get to the station ?

Presumably not enough room due to the roadworks. Choices are divert via Magdala Crescent or dismount and walk.

"Presumably not enough room due to the roadworks."

Really don't think that's true by the station at the cycle lane.

    Just passed, photos later.

Noticed on my way back (about half past two) that there's now a Cyclists Dismount sign, placed just to the left of the very end of the red cycle lane. Don't think it was there this morning, but I was paying far more attention to the bus behind me, so could easily have missed it.

@Frenchy what? just where the lane throws you out into the traffic? As if....

If in doubt, stick up a Cyclists Dismount sign. Fixes all know infrastructure problems at next to no cost.

    Sigh.
