Hello! What do you want to do with your bike Berta? You can cycle around with a poodle in your basket, you can get muddy in the fields or travel long distances on the roads with your mates. What's your hopes?
I use my bike for getting around town (inc commuting), getting the shopping home and the occasional camping trip. You might have entirely different needs.

Good evening.
How far will you (initially) be going on it? How much will you (initially) be carrying on it? How much do you want to spend on it? Will you lock it here and there? Will you lift it up a stair?Posted 7 years ago # -
Will you take it on a train? Will you ride it in the rain?

Hi Berta. I think you will notice that a lot of people ride mountain bikes in Edinburgh. The city has a lot of hills and there are cobbled streets and potholes. A mountain bike helps with these. Cheap second-hand bikes can be bought from various places.

I will try not to rhyme my advice
Though rhymed advice is very niceBerta, you do not need a full suspension mountain bike, a hybrid is fine, you should go with 7 or 8 gears, and lighter weight. E.g. Edinburgh Bike Co-op Courier bike. Number of gears not the thing, range the gears cover is the thing. Single speed bikes are trendy and work well on the canal towpath. The Union canal is a contour canal so towpath is very flat. If straying from towpath, get more gears but no more than 8 (we won't check this you can get 9, 10, 11 etc if you want to)
You must have mudguards, lights and panniers. (Only really lights that are a must)
