Holyrood Park: paths, crossings and closures

The statement below is rather opaque, but refers to on-going discussions about path improvements and (at last!) additional proper crossings over Queen's Drive. No timetable for action yet.

Joint statement from Historic Environment Scotland and the City of Edinburgh Council in relation to the proposed multi user path improvement within Holyrood Park:

Historic Environment Scotland (HES) and City of Edinburgh Council, with joint-funding from Sustrans, are working together on a design for walking and cycling routes through Holyrood Park. These routes, between the park entrances at Holyrood Park Road, Royal Park Terrace and Queen’s Park Avenue, will link into the wider walking and cycling network, the ‘QuietRoutes’ Network, that the Council is developing.

Due to the status of Holyrood Park, as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, Property in Care and Site of Special Scientific Interest, the initial stages of this design require detailed discussion with key partners such as HES Heritage Management and Scottish Natural Heritage. Initial plans have to take into consideration numerous factors; for example the Park’s setting, heritage conservation, nature conservation, the Park’s dark sky statement and the safety and welfare of all users.

The design will aim to address various observations, suggestions and concerns previously raised by members of the public to HES and the Council.

Once proposed routes and draft designs are prepared, a wider public consultation will take place, similar to that carried out by the Council during other active travel projects.

When a final design is agreed, further funding for implementation will be sought.

Just ban through-traffic on the roads. Job done. No need for expensive epic-time-consuming gold-plated path-building

If only. But that's not going to happen in the foreseeable future. These plans could be the next best option.

    @nedd1e_h, you're right of course.

These plans do sound promising though.

@c30c60, do you have a web link for further information? HES web site maybe?

No, I've no links to further info. The statement was sent by the Head Ranger at Holyrood Park.

I'm disappointed there's no will to reduce traffic in the Park, but hopeful that new crossings will make a difference to speeds & behaviour - especially on the section by the St Leonard's area where I have my grittiest hometime moments.

Went for a walk today round by the upper Queen's Drive by Dunsapie Loch.
We couldn't believe how quiet it was. One of the few times we could get off the narrow pavement without worrying about traffic. Were a few bicycles but no conflict.

Turns out that the colder weather had created a patch of frost on the road so park rangers had closed road to cars. Bikes were still going through and as it was on uphill only seemed to be managing fine.

Imagine if it was like this more of the time.

Wearing my Northfield & Willowbrae Community Councillor hat, myself and a couple of other CC members had a meeting with a chap from HES last night to discuss the proposed new cycle routes in the park.

It would be appear this was initially driven by the council who want to use routes through the park to link up several 'quiet ways'.

They now have detailed draft plan that they say will go out for consultation soon. The headline is a continuous cycle path, here's a slightly rambling summary:

    • A new gate at the junction of Queen's Park Ave and Meadowbank Crescent.
    • A new path running down behind car park to St. Margaret's Loch. The current 'triangular' road junction will be replaced with a 'T' to provide space for the path.
    • New or widened (to 4m?) shared path shadowing Queen's Drive to Holyrood Park Road. There will be places where the path will be narrower as they have no space, such as the bend on QD near St. Leanords.
    • The path will take the 'long way round' both roundabouts between QD and HRP. A more direct route on the west side is ruled out by a big lump of granite in the way.
    • New gate on east side of HPR. Exact routing TBD but they have at lest considered current desire lines. There's also a chance to link this to the path that joint The Inncoent at the east end of the tunnel.

    Other points:

    • All crossings to be wide table crossings.
    • Lighting is a difficult, they've been experimenting with different options including the marker lights used on the canal.
    • They recognise the likelihood of conflicts around St. Margaret's Loch and the busy area by the Horse Wynd roundabout. The ice cream van was mentioned.

Good work. Any mention of them improving access from Dumbiedykes Road?

@urchaidh, thanks for the update. Very encouraging news.

Any continuous path is certainly to be welcomed. Once this and the segregated cycle track on HPR are built, then finally my son may be able to cycle to school in relative safety. Will also make my sojourns that way less stressful/hazardous!

@frenchy, yes, looks like the northernmost the two current paths will be upgraded to a similar standard of cycle path and a table crossing put in to the path on the other side.

There are a few other crossings to join up with wee bits of path on the north side of QD around Holyrood Gait and Horse Wynd, but these seemed to still be under discussion.

I will check if I can share the drawing I have.

@frenchy - One of the other CC members asked about some steps on the Dumbiedykes path and the HES chap said some improvement work was going to be done as a result of the recent Spokes competition - I've just looked this up and it is the steps you mention.

It would be good if they could upgrade the path from the southeast corner of Holyrood palace to Ann Tce / Sunnybank Pl.

That way cyclists can make their way in safety to the underpass under the railway and on to Meadowbank, Lochend Park, etc.

Sorry, nedd1e_h, that's was on the plan too and I totally forgot about it. Slightly less direct than your diagram, following the palace boundary wall for a bit then cutting over to the west side of the ranger building before heading east.

Desire lines will be a-forming, if they don't tarmac it...

If they do upgrade that path it would be great. Hopefully they can change the access gate to Royal Park Terrace too? Tricky to navigate with a bike...

Wow... bet you that was popular!
Are the signs clear enough or do you think they'll appeal?
Has someone picture of the entrance to park with restriction sign they can post?
I know from FOI that the park in the past had three times more 'banned commercial vehicles than 'welcome' cyclists. (3% bike use to around 9% vans, buses etc)

I see someone called Verdi is engaging with Twitter.
"Cyclists are a menace in the park and they are not meant to be on the pavement or endangering pedestrians."
HS were fined for their dangerous cycleways in Holyrood - once these are improved then Verdi should be happy ;-) or not.

Ah Verdi. Lots of us have had interactions with her. She been hit by people on bikes three or four times a week for years now, so it's understandable she's cross.

Verdi seemed quite the character, a quick look back on her twitter feed was entertaining. Surprised she doesn't have any injuries from all the collisions, perhaps she wears a helmet.

HES are employing a traffic management consultant to look at cycle safety (lack of) on Holyrood Park Low Road. They are also talking to Police Scotland about a 'close pass' operation in the park.

As part of the Meadowbank redevelopment, a foot/cyclepath along the route of the old Clockmill Road may be created, which would link any railway path with Holyrood park, via Clockmill Lane.

I somehow think that it would have been better if the Parliament project had been extended southwards a bit, to block off Queen's Drive to through traffic as well as Holyrood Road. Then the park would be access only.

I tend to think it should have been built further west like Glasgow to help regeneration.
