The results will inform our own actions in response to COVID-19, add value to other consultations and calls for information HES and other organisations are making, and provide material to promote the continuing value of the sector during the crisis.

That survey takes considerably less than 15 minutes to complete because it doesn't seem to include an actual survey?

Only question is if you're an individual.

I suppose I could make my answer to that 'other' and then specify 'close Holyrood Park to cars you idiots'

They seem to have removed the questions from the survey rather than cars from the park.

So it would appear that there are actual survey questions for anything other than an individual response. I've now completed it using the 'other' options, requesting 'Please fix this survey for individuals and please close Holyrood Park to vehicular traffic.' at every available opportunity so thanks toomanybikes. Is this just a mistake, or do they not want to receive individuals' opinions for some reason?

It does specifically say in the introductory text
"As the lead public body for the sector, Historic Environment Scotland (HES) is conducting this survey of businesses and organisations.

We appreciate the time you are taking to share your experience as an organisation or business." (emphases mine)

My response in case anyone fancies copying the approach (certain details redacted).

    ---

    Introduction
1 Which of the following are you responding on behalf of? (Please select one)
    Other (please specify):
A local resident concerned about Holyrood Park still being open to motor vehicles, when it should be closed to allow social distancing while exercising.

5 Which areas of the historic environment sector is it involved with?(Please select all that apply)
Natural heritage (including landscapes), Urban and rural development, Other (please specify):
    Other (please specify):
    Holyrood park neighbour

Affects of Coronavirus (COVID-19) on your business, organisation or group.
8 In what ways has it been affected by the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak and the associated distancing measures? (Select all that apply)
    Other (please specify):
It has impacted on the ability of all users of Holyrood Park, but especially on pedestrians and cyclists.

9 Please tell us more about these effects.
It is difficult to socially distance in Holyrood Park because motor vehicles are still using it as a through route, or people are driving through the park to use the car parks. This is irresponsible and limits the space for cyclists and pedestrians to use the park for exercise while social distancing. Please close Holyrood Park to motor vehicles immediately.

12 In your opinion, what level of risk does the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pose to the viability of your business, community group or organisation? (Select one option)
Moderate risk - we would be able to continue to operate as before provided we successfully mitigate the impact

16 What opportunities, if any, do you think the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak represents for your organisation, group or business?
The opportunity to exercise in Holyrood Park free of motor vehicles.

17 What intervention and support would help your business, group or organisation mitigate any risk and make the most of any opportunities?
Closing Holyrood Park to motor vehicles.

P.S.:- If HES are only concerned about businesses and organisations, then they have the wong priorities.

People's views need to be heard by this quango. As the saying goes, whatever it takes, by any means necessary.

“16 What opportunities, if any, do you think the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak represents for your organisation, group or business?
The opportunity to exercise in Holyrood Park free of motor vehicles.”

Wonder if they will be filling it in themselves -

    The opportunity to

    A) understand local concerns

    B) demonstrate that we listen

    C) show leadership and demonstrate the opportunities to improve HP for people and wildlife (not just toads)

    D) assume that closing the Park to through traffic is desirable and possible

    etc.

@fimm well spotted! I wonder why they included an option for individuals leading to a non-survey in that case? :\

Wow - did HES really ask what opportunities a worldwide pandemic that has killed over 20,000 UK citizens presents business!?

Clearly a cautionary tale about the perils of working in the same room as your drinks cabinet.

@Morningsider, or HES are acquainted with the tenets of Disaster Capitalism?

Much as they're habituated to the dogma of Drive, Drive, Drive and Park As Close As Physically Possible To The Destination.

No details of which areas might be covered have yet emerged, but city centre streets used by many cyclists and walkers are likely to be among them.

Police Scotland and the Scottish Government have issued clear guidance to say that people should not drive anywhere for exercise and that you should stay local.

As I was completing a lap of Arthur's Seat earlier this evening, a number of other people on bikes, including myself, were stopped by police (not in a particularly socially distanced fashion) at the roundabout by the top of the crags. They explained that because the top road is coned off at either end, this means that we shouldn't be cycling on it, and also that there had been a couple of incidents of pedestrians being clipped by cyclists on that route due to it being so busy. I asked if vehicular traffic could be removed from the lower roads to give us space to cycle safely there and they played the Historic Scotland card while giving the indication that they would do that if they could. I then did a lower level lap via Duddingston and back round into the park from the east and they were only just leaving as I made my way up the hill to the roundabout again. I don't remember spotting them as I passed the roundabout on my initial lap which suggests that they were there around half an hour.

In relation to the council asking HES to close the park:

I haven’t even been asked never mind agreed. Adam and Alex simply discussed their pursuing it in my Skype presence. As I understand from family the Park was so busy yesterday social distancing wasn’t being observed. Time to stop encouraging it’s use.

They really would rather shut the park entirely rather than exclude private motor traffic, wouldn't they?

Is the High Road ‘coned off’ at both ends? When I was there a couple of weeks ago, just the barriers were across (for the toads’ safety of course, not humans), and so historically cycling was always OK

I did 3 laps of Arthur's Seat last week along with a few dozen others. I did see a policeman walking round High Road but no interaction or notices about the road being closed for cyclists. Barriers at both ends with cones to deter motorcyclists.
As far as toad safety is concerned there were as many people running and walking on the road.
At the loch they had set up more cones to block vehicular traffic.
@carfreeholyrood had good tweet with people all squeezed onto the 1m path allocated for cycling safely - also popular with walkers it seems.
We will look back one day and shake our heads as to why this green space can't be managed correctly. Car parks were open and full - assisted by open roads.

#drivefornormality - London leading with M25 nice and busy again!

I thought the closed road around Arthur's seat is open to pedestrians and cyclists. Confusing though. Two weeks ago I went along it and there were cyclists going comfortably both ways, as did I. Today again people were going in both directions, but I got shouted at a few times for going the wrong way by racing cyclists coming towards me. I was staying on the left and almost had a collision as a guy came racing down on his bike on my side of the road.

Now to end all the confusion. Is it one way or is it not now that it's closed to motorised traffic? I was treating it like a shared use path, as were most people as there were joggers, walkers and cyclists going both ways along it

“Is it one way or is it not?”

Normally it is (no idea if legally enforceable).

Shouldn’t matter when “open to pedestrians and cyclists“, but then “racing cyclists” may well be ‘entitled’ but should perhaps show more responsibility.
