More than one in four say they will change their mode of transport in the new year, when rail fares will go up by as much as 13 per cent. Many of them, particularly in the capital, say they are planning to drive, while fewer people are likely to go for greener or healthier options such as car sharing, walking or running to work.

Of course the "capital" is London rather than Edinburgh where more people commute by train, generally over longer distances.

If the poll is correct, it suggests that most people are only willing to consider a motor mode.

I'd wager though that Londoners who come in from train come in from out side sensible riding range though i don't think i'd drive in London if you were paying me.

It will be interesting to see how long they stick with the car commute once they find the roads clogged up with their fellow ex-train commuters and the price of fuel keeps going through the roof...

And they'll all get into central London and park their cars where?

  5. And surely a daily congestion charge will rack up the cost???

As steveo says, it's likely most train commuters really are outside a sensible cycling distance, but the car as an option to the train in London? Now that's true madness.

Commuters forced into cars by rail fare rises... and in Scotland's case a lack of trains

Maybe time for some companies to hand in the keys to their franchise if they can't operate them?

As mentioned elsewhere in this forum many 'drivers' have season tickets with no service.
