CityCyclingEdinburgh was launched on the 27th of October 2009 as "an experiment".
IT’S TRUE!
CCE is 15years old!
Well done to ALL posters
It soon became useful and entertaining. There are regular posters, people who add useful info occasionally and plenty more who drop by to watch. That's fine. If you want to add news/comments it's easy to register and become a member.
RULES No personal insults. No swearing.

first thing i'd do is focus on maintenance
you see young people in norway maintaining path networks and you know they are paid sufficiently through sovereign wealth and are not demeaned by their work in the slightest
here. we just leave it all to mulch and ignore the sporadic complaints til early spring at the earliest
There are bits that need resurfacing though. For example the access by St Mark's Park is shockingly poor, potholed, downright dangerous. The path between there and McDonald Road is rubbish too: surface breaking up, potholes, etc. Various other access points need attention as well.
They need to sort out drainage at several locations including Silverknowes.
Whether that requires spending £900k is another matter.
I've said it before but parts of the Restalrig path need resurfacing as they are breaking up due to tree roots. Also drainage below Lochend Road bridge needs sorted: permanently flooded there. Don't get me started on Seafield Street.....terrible surface.
Sigh. Other than bit at the top of the hill at Silverknowes which needs sorting, this seems like a lot of money to spend on a path that is generally in good condition.
Especially when you consider that the Salveson Steps still need replacing with a walkway round the cliffs and many, many other projects that could get done instead.
Consultations really are killing progress. Classic example - they're having to have *another* consultation about a crossing on the A8 at the bottom of Kaimes Road because the other one has expire. head->desk.

Attack on SG staff member on cycle path at Craigleith
At 6 pm on Wednesday 15 November a member of the SG staff was cycling home from VQ along the cycle path which runs west from Leith then south to Haymarket. From the fork at Craigleith the cycle path runs north-west to Davidsons Mains and Cramond.
As the staff member cycled north-west from the Craigleith fork towards Davidsons Mains and Cramond (at a point some 50 metres north of the Craigleith junction) he encountered a group of 4 or 5 males standing on either side of the path. At least one of these males was wielding a large branch or pole. As the staff member passed these males they approached him in an aggressive and menacing manner. The staff member attempted to cycle away but one male ran after him, brandishing a heavy branch or pole with which he attacked the staff member, striking him on the head and upper arm. These injuries while not severe looked very uncomfortable. The staff member was able to get away and immediately called the police on 999 from the locus, but at a safe distance. There was no police response to the locus although the offenders remained in the area. The staff member then made his way home.
The staff member sustained a cut to his right ear and bruising to his upper right arm. He believes that the cycle helmet he was wearing saved him from more serious injury.
Cycle safe everyone.
"Consultations really are killing progress."
Consultations are necessary - for example the lack of any meaningful consultation on Picardy Place gyratory so far is scandalous.
What is also killing progress is the TRO process (biased in favour of preserving the status quo for motors, IMHO) and the inability of the council to ever touch parking.
@nedd1e_h, agreed. This is why on-street segregated routes are taking so long.
The consultations are aimed in part at defusing potential objections to TROs.
Of course they are necessary, to an extant. But we seem to be caught in a bit of paralysis by analysis at the moment. Especially, as pointed out, by the added TRO year long bit after the consultations.
There are rumblings from the Scottish Government that the TRO process may be "streamlined" in the not too distant future. No details as yet.
@biketrain
That's very disturbing. I'm sure a number of us cycle that way at about that time on a very regular basis. Perhaps this deserves its own thread, as I'm sure I'm not the only one who would welcome any further information about this - perhaps to hear more of the victim's story or find out if the police manage to identify and charge the perpetrators. Obviously nothing that might compromise any ongoing police investigation though, assuming of course there is one.
Last night about 10.30 I was coming down the Drylaw path approaching 4 young men in two groups of two. They had a bright light and seemed to be looking for something in the undergrowth beside the path. As I got close to the first two, one shouted 'gies your bike' and moved towards me, but in a fairly half-hearted way. I just carried on (quite fast, as it was downhill), followed by another shout of 'gies your f*ing' bike'. It didn't seem premeditated, more that they just saw an opportunity to spice up a dull evening by hassling a passerby. But if they'd had a makeshift weapon to hand, as described above, it mght have been a very different story.
"As I got close to the first two, one shouted 'gies your bike' and moved towards me, but in a fairly half-hearted way. "
That's an old one. Lost count of the number of times some wee ned has called out the exact same quip over the last 30 odd years. Other quips include "Mate! You've got a flat tyre!" etc.
@Colonies_Chris Might it be worth 101-ing that incident? It seems to be the same area and a very similar incident. I'd be terrified if something like that happened to me.
Now that the polis have a load of lovely bikes there's no good reason they can't randomly patrol the cycle paths on occasion.
@crowriver: A few years ago on another section of the NEPN, I spotted two teenage girls standing talking by the side of the path ahead. As I approached, one of them pushed the other to the ground. It was all so obviously staged that I didn't even slow down to pass them. As I went past, the older girl called out in an outraged tone "You were supposed to stop, you stupid f*ker"!
I was walking on House O' Hill Avenue a couple of days ago, and I was reminded of this thread.
That street has long been a mess - with huge holes in the road.
It now has the council's favourite surface: that gooey mess with lots of small stones. And, even a couple of months after it was done,
(A) there are hundreds of loose stones - which present a skid risk.
(B) And the surface is really rough - which would make it hard work to cycle on.
And that's my primary concern about the resurfacing of NEPN - not that it's a poor use of money (which it is), but that we'll end up with a surface that's so much worse than it is right now.
Especially given that there'll be no vehicles (other than the occasional council van) to bed the stones in.
PS BTW, Corbiehill Rd - which as buses go over it, as well as other heavy vehicles - is in bad condition now. Far worse to cycle on than it was 12 months ago, before it was resurfaced.
Just check out Montgomery St if you want to see what happens to poorly bonded surface treatment after a few years
In places there's more of the old surface than new.
Ironically, I noticed last night that they have started resurfacing works at Montgomery Street (Easter Road end). Well they've planed off all the crumbling stuff and there was a mini-steamroller parked up at 8.30pm yesterday. Presume they plan to lay fresh tarmac at some point soon, festive embargoes notwithstanding...
"As I went past, the older girl called out in an outraged tone "You were supposed to stop, you stupid f*ker"!"
Haha, very good. Who's the stupid whatsitsname now?
When resurfacing the NEPN I guess it would be better if they installed pitch heating
The detailed drawings for the contracted work on the NEPN have been uploaded to the consultation hub.

EXISTING PARKING BAYS TO BE REMOVED
“
Looks like some good stuff around the Water of Leith path. From a quick look I think they're going to be fixing the drainage issue which leads to the boggy slippery mess near the car park. They also appear to be adding some bollards to formalize the desire line over the grass.
They are addressing a number of drainage issues on the Roseburn path including the area as the path goes under Queensferry Road but I don't see any talk of drainage for the two parts which regularly flood in Silverknowes.
I only see one drawing from around Granton - has some of it been taken down?
Yes, most of it seems to have disappeared...
Yes, one I directly linked to isn’t there either.
Suspicious...
Perhaps someone can upload these to a web server somewhere so others can have a peek?
Suspicious...
Probably just uploaded too soon/without proper authority.
I didn't spot anything controversial in any where I'd managed to follow the link prior to their removal (two thirds?).
