A man who crashed into a parked police car on the A9 while drink-driving has been handed a ban. Shafeer Rishad, 25, from Glasgow, previously pled guilty to drink driving and was sentenced to 200 hours of community service and a 20-month disqualification at Inverness Sheriff Court on Thursday.

Didn’t get to the sentencing stage though…

More than 900 drivers who breached the no-left turn rules at the top of Leith Walk over a one week period faced no fine or other penalty, it has been revealed.

Not so much a rubbish sentence as one that puts a lot of driving sentencing into some perspective!

West Yorkshire Police issued him with a notice of intended prosecution. Bowden, 56, of Lancut Road, Witney, pleaded guilty by postal form to speeding, driving without a licence and driving without insurance.

His case was dealt with by Bradford and Keighley Magistrates’ Court in a process known as the single justice procedure, with the case decided by a single magistrate in a closed room – rather than a bench of three justices in open court.

He was fined £300 and banned from driving for eight months ‘due to repeat offending’, court documents recorded.

He was also ordered to pay £90 in costs to the police and a victim surcharge of £120. The surcharge helps funds services that support victims of crime.

Prosecutor Nicholas Hearn said he has previous speeding convictions, including one offence for driving 95mph in a 50mph zone and was banned from driving for six months in November 2020.

Although the sentence was disappointing, this is a great example of effective partnership working in the fight against wildlife crimes.

The most ridiculous sentence not involving death or serious injury yet??

    https://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/road-rage-cyclist-threats-kill-27154345

"Edward Shane, of Merlin Crescent, Newport, had previously pleaded guilty to making threats to kill, dangerous driving, assault by beating, criminal damage, driving with excess alcohol, and failing to provide a specimen for analysis when he appeared in the dock for sentencing. He has eight previous convictions for 15 offences including one for drink-driving.

    ...

With a one-quarter discount for his guilty pleas Shane was sentenced to 18 months in prison suspended for two years and was ordered to complete a rehabilitation course. The defendant was banned from driving for three years and was ordered to take and pass an extended test before he get his licence back."

These wide-ranging measures have so far been used to criminalise everyone from rough sleepers to buskers and cyclists. Southend-on-Sea, for example, has banned people from “using bikes in a way that has a negative effect for others”.

The partner of a pregnant woman killed by a driver who filmed himself speeding at 123mph has branded her killer's sentence "insulting".

Adil Iqbal, 22, was jailed for 12 years after admitting causing the death of Frankie Jules-Hough, 38, on the M66 in Bury, Greater Manchester, on 13 May.

A 24-year-old man who crashed into a horse and its rider was sentenced to a suspended 13-month prison term.

Alex Cole, from Ross-on-Wye, crashed into the horse, breaking its pelvis and leaving the animal so badly injured that it had to be put down.

Mr Cole then set his vehicle on fire after falsely reporting his van had been stolen, to destroy the evidence.

Drivers who kill pedestrians, cyclists or motorcyclists on Scotland's roads are likely to receive tougher sentences under new guidance for judges.

It doesn't apply to 'death by careless' it seems. I don't know what proportion of killings are charged with one offence over the other, but it feels like lots are pled down to 'careless' which then takes out any of the new guidelines?

During a sentencing hearing at the High Court in Edinburgh, Lord Sandison pointed out that Toshack was driving while he more than two times over the legal limit for cannabis.

Toshack admitted that he smoked the drug the night before the collision and said he had been using cannabis for 30 years.

The first offender, from Kelty in Fife, had previously denied causing the death of Mr Harrison by dangerous driving in Edinburgh during a trial.

A jury convicted him of the lesser offence of causing death by careless driving and driving while over the legal limit for cannabis.

Today's good sentencing for a change

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-south-scotland-67016538

"On sentencing, Lord Arthurson said Taylor had made "wholly inappropriate and scurrilous" comments about Mr Wilson's relatives.

The judge added he had "doubled down" by "further victim blaming" in a pre-sentencing report.

He said Taylor had proceeded "yet again" to blame Mr Wilson, from Newtongrange, for causing the collision.

"In my view, you outrageously made the appalling suggestion that his family were financially motivated," he said.

"The author of the report describes your attitude to the consequences of your actions as blasé and questioned the authenticity of your apparently stated remorse."

Lord Arthurson gave no discount for the guilty plea for a number of reasons including Taylor's conduct and for failing to turn up for an earlier court date.

He was also banned from driving for 16 years."

The mention of the spare tyre in the headline is really strange there. I was expecting a sudden, "accidental" swerve. But the video shows what looks to me to be repeated and deliberate swerving.

A two year ban seems very lenient to me.

I would say that the initial undertake and brake check we're definitely deliberate but then he lost control which lead to violent swerving and crashes.

"This was a very serious offence indeed. I think the right sentence is three to four years in prison - it's that serious. Cyclists are vulnerable and it's the court's first duty to protect them."

But he went on to list the reasons why he would suspend the jail sentence, including Torgerson's history of mental health issues and a doctor's opinion that she suffers with post-traumatic stress disorder that could cause "outbursts".
