    This was being touted in the press at Christmas. Looks now to be real;

    The reason I abjure road cycling outside towns as much as possible is that I'm losing the ability not to imagine being struck from behind by a tonne of metal at 60mph. 50mph would still be fatal but much quieter, much calmer and much safer.

    It will be interesting to see the extent to which the 80kph limit is as disregarded as the current 90kph limit.

    amazing to think that with the advent of driverless cars would be almost zero road deaths as everyone would be doing the speed limit and obeying all traffic laws....except for mechanical issues i guess.

    perhaps in that utopia on the roads more people would actually cycle because they trust the AI in the cars far more than the human.

    I suspect the rise in deaths in the last few years (as also seen in other countries) is mostly due to the increase in distracted driving.

    Still, if they can't drive without looking at their phones, lower speed limits it is...
