There was a helicopter flying back and forth at fairly low altitude over the Lothianburn/New Swanston/Fairmilehead area last night. It was there for about an hour from 10:30pm. It had a searchlight and seemed at one point to be lighting up the area around the Swanston golf course. It looked very much as if they were searching for someone or something.

Anyone know anything about what might have been going on? The BBC and the EEN don't seem to have anything about it and the Police Scotland Twitter feed has nothing but travel warnings...

Nothing on it this time, but Police Scotland's helicopter team have their own twitter account, which often says what's happening: https://twitter.com/polscotair/

Well it's definitely their birdy: it was out again this morning so I could get a good look at it and it's that blue & yellow beastie on their twitter page. Still nothing about what they were doing there, though.

Suspect they've gone to ground now ahead of forecast incoming weather.

The police helicopter is often out and about. I doubt whatever it is doing would necessarily make the news. It is often routine stuff. Although it was indeed the police aircraft, the fact that it is blue/yellow doesn’t identify it. That colour scheme is standard for helicopters doing low level patrol work.

Apparently someone saw lights on the hill that may have been signalling distress. Nothing found I understand.

“Apparently someone saw lights on the hill that may have been signalling distress.“

That’ll be a mountain biker going over undulating ground.

Usually obvious as they don’t stay in the same place for long.

@Lezzles: Yep thats the message I saw on Twitter. Poor souls were out on the hills from 8.30pm til 1am looking

Can you point me to that tweet?

I did wonder whether it might have had anything to do with this:

    https://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/our-region/edinburgh/missing-police-keen-to-trace-42-year-old-tracy-simpson-1-4665845

Even though it apparently wasn't related, I nonetheless hope that Ms Simpson turns up safe and well. (A friend of mine is insulin dependent and has caused us a few worries in the past, so this kind of story always feels a bit "close to home".)

@stiltskin: The police helicopter is often out and about.

It's not commonly out at that time of night round our way, for that length of time (I can well believe that it's more common in certain other areas of the city - naming no names).

Although it was indeed the police aircraft, the fact that it is blue/yellow doesn’t identify it. That colour scheme is standard for helicopters doing low level patrol work.

It was too far away for me to make out any identifying marks so I just assumed that the colour matching the photo on the polis Twitter page meant that it must have been theirs. I shall consider myself better informed for the future - thank you!

OK, so there's more info appearing online now - but almost more confusing than before!

Tweed Valley MRT confirm that they were called out to the Pentlands last night after reports of a stationery light on Allermuir Hill, and their efforts were assisted by Coastguard helicopter Rescue 951:

    https://www.facebook.com/TVMRT/posts/1613440402116286

    Also reported in EEN:

    https://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/our-region/edinburgh/why-was-a-helicopter-flying-over-south-edinburgh-last-night-1-4666312

However, that search was stood down at 01:10 Friday morning. So why was the polis chopper out this morning? Perhaps related to this:

    https://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/our-region/edinburgh/jenna-mitchelmore-taken-to-hospital-after-being-found-by-police-1-4665855

"The 38-year-old was found at around 12.15pm on Friday 19th January at Mortonhall Golf Course. She has been taken to hospital, having been exposed to the adverse weather conditions over the past few hours. Jenna Mitchelmore was last seen at her home address in Fox Springs Rise the Oxgangs area of the city at around 3.30am on Friday January 19."

Second missing person found today, after this Finnish lassie turned up in St Mary's Cathedral at 9am having been missing for 10 days:

No word about the missing diabetic lady yet, though.
