@hankchief but she named one street and she was wrong. In my opinion. School nearby need to slow the cars down as they approach terrible junction at Robertson ave. Et cetera

Yeah, but at least she broke ranks and named a road, which moved the debate on from generic statements about blankets.

@hankchief, i will give her that, grudgingly. Predict petrol head propaganda will continue from that quarter. She is smarter than Nick but a. That is not hard and b. That is not good

I fear we’ll be looking back at the last seven years as a golden age for Tory support of cycling in Edinburgh :-(
A low bar. Really hoping not the case.

I've had a slight soft spot for Nick Cook ever since he told Peter Gregson off when he was kicking off at the Transport and Environment Committee.
Posted 5 years ago # -
sensible thing to have done. gregson was clearly causing more harm than good to the cause.
Posted 5 years ago # -
@SRD - never mind his motives, however cunning and political, it was still enjoyable.
Posted 5 years ago # -
(Edit: nope, not giving him more airtime)

It’s ok folks, Nick’s been on his first bike ride and felt safe. We’ve been wrong all these years.

New bike arrived this morning; just back from first jaunt.
The only danger I felt came from navigating poor carriageways & copious quantity of potholes on main roads.
Quiet time, but more than enough room given by all
Posted 5 years ago # -
Ah potholes
A Tory Party obsession (especially when other parties are in charge of LAs/Govs).
Posted 5 years ago # -
"Potholes are more dangerous than drivers to cyclists" was a common theme from Conservative councillors a while ago, but when stats were put in front of them they seemed to actually take heed. I hope Nick's not about to go back to it.
Posted 5 years ago # -
Trust a Tory to dislike poor carriageways. These roads have been cosseted by the state for far too long, they should get on their bike and, with hard work, could one day become dual carriageways.
Posted 5 years ago # -
Let's find when he's next going cycling and someone with a car can treat him to a couple of close fast passes. I'm sure he'll appreciate that.
Posted 5 years ago # -
@fimm
Harsh but essentially fair. Even if someone could just shout that he's a c*** from the cab of an HGV for no reason that would do it.

Ah potholes
A Tory Party obsession (especially when other parties are in charge of LAs/Govs).And even more so when the Conservative government has starved said LAs of cash for a decade, forcing them to choose between funding services that people depend on or resurfacing roads.

“even more so when the Conservative government has starved said LAs of cash for a decade”
Ditto SNP Scotland.

Cllr Whyte tweets:
"@Edinburgh_CC implementation of “active travel” projects is abysmal. That’s on the blanket 10% budget rather than having a plan. Also, we actually have a very good off road network. Key thing at the moment is keeping cyclists off paths and Covid distanced from pedestrians."
"I support cycling infrastructure with three principles attached. It should not slow up public transport on which far more normally rely, it needs to be segregated from pavements to maintain safe space for vulnerable pedestrians, it needs to be funded and thought out properly."

“Very good off road network” - there’s someone who never travels south of Princes St by bike.
Posted 5 years ago # -
@IWRATS a little more context might be necessary for the message to hit home, e.g. "you're a Rule 2 for cycling", else he may just shrug it off due to being a Conservative.

“Very good off road network”
I'm a big ugly man and I sometimes feel a bit nervous on parts of the NEPN of a night. Not quite sure Cllr Whyte caried out an equalities assessment before opening his gob.
And as @Stickman says go and show me the path from Old College to KB.
Posted 5 years ago # -
This is the same Cllr Iain Whyte who claimed that the roads in Edinburgh with a speed limit above 20mph don't form a network because they "don't join up".
Posted 5 years ago # -
...and who advised people to use the “dedicated cycle path” on George Street.
Posted 5 years ago # -
Given Cllr Whyte's concerns, now is the perfect time for him to show us which active travel schemes in Edinburgh are slowing down our buses. Traffic is moving at free-flow speeds, so the tricky job of accounting for the impact traffic congestion is removed. Come on Councillor, name those schemes!

Cllr Webber on Twitter: "Can I ask how those in economically deprived areas can even afford an e-bike? Can’t see many for much less than £1k.... doubt many families would be able to afford one never mind one for each member of the family needing to travel to work"
Wait till she learns how much cars cost.
Posted 5 years ago # -
Perhaps Cllr Webber is about to suggest a radical redistribution of wealth, universal basic income, closure of Crown tax havens, abolition of the British class system and kittens for everyone?
Posted 5 years ago # -
The UK Government gives out grants of up to £3000 for purchasing an electric car and £1500 for an e-motorbike plus another £350 towards a charging point. For this cash they could literally hand out free/highly discounted e-bikes to low-income car-free households, or for households with a car - an e-bike in return for car scrappage and a commitment not to purchase another car.

Nick Cook.
Golden Age.
Told you.
Posted 5 years ago # -
Decathlon ebike costs about the same as a years ridacard. The bus is inaccessible to the working class apparently.

“It’s just a joke”
Yeah, his target market already opposes bike lanes for any reason. He’s given them another absurd thing to focus on.
