“Because its ENTIRELY reasonable in a free society for a family or individual to need or want a vehicle for work & leisure.Fuel costs form a significant part of many households' costs.@Conservatives want ppl to have more of their money in their pocket. That's why we've frozen duty.”

@neddie: “One can only hope that when his kid becomes a toddler & starts stottering about on the edge of pavements, he’ll see the benefits of “blanket” 20mph”

I suspect he was the Tory PR guy who drafted the response to the pavement parking bill, objecting to “blanket” bans and saying some pavement parking is harmless. Pushing a buggy may cause him to rethink, but I doubt it.

Fuel costs form a significant part of many households' costs.

Maybe so, but do they actually cover the costs to society?

What about in societies that not entirely free?

Nick's right - the Conservatives do want people to keep their money in their pocket. Can you guess which kind of people?

Yes - those with the fullest pockets already!

Train and bus ticket costs form a significant part of many households' costs.

and yet somehow no headlines about the Hard (o)Pressed Bus Commuter.

Right. Just logged on. Did we get a response to my polite tweet to the Edinburgh Tories?

Ah - just seen my notifications...

The deputy chairman of the Conservative party was on the radio yesterday.

He said the fuel duty freeze is to enable public servants - firefighters, doctors, nurses - to get to work.

The assertion went unchallenged by the BBC interviewer. I try to avoid BBC current affairs output.

Higher tax rate in rUK proposed to start in budget at £50k pa. Should be welcomed by hard pressed media folk?
In Scotland they will still pay higher tax above £43k. (Though wages here are traditionally less?). Not sure if Holyrood will adjust Scottish Income Tax to reflect rUK rates.
Edit: Greens will insist SG stick to the progressive rate system here. Without their vote budget won't be passed in Holyrood. Cue right wing media meltdown of injustice to higher earners!

    Who could have predicted etc.

So Nick Cook wants people to have more of their own money in their pocket. But is ignorant of how to go about achieving this. If he wants people to have more of their money in their pockets he should be discouraging vehicle ownership. It seems to be the biggest avoidable sink in most household's budgets. Even more so when multiple vehicles are counted in the same household.

Media-savvy politicians should know by now that it’s not a good idea to pose holding a bit of paper. Follow the whole thread.

Nick not a happy chappie about this:

Green city centre Cllr Claire Miller said: “Cllr Cook has for some time revelled in his role as a pound-shop Jeremy Clarkson, defending to the end the unrestricted use of cars even where the cost is horrendous pollution and congestion in our city.

City centre Conservative Cllr Joanna Mowat, said: “It looks as if people who can park outside their homes for free will be paying to subsidise the loss of parking on George Street and other parts of the city centre.

I think she needs to re-read her words VERY carefully and understand what her voters might think about her encouraging the idea of the ‘benefits’ of people driving to the city centre (even if they pay a token price).

Perhaps she’s preparing to call for everyone to be able to park outside their own house for free(?)

I suppose that might be a vote winner in the New Town...

Will no-one think of those poor south Morningside residents who currently roam free from clowncil parking charges? How will they manage to find 38p a day for an annual parking permit (cars up to a 1.8l engine)?

@neddie Nick has had a go at Claire on Twitter but also said "I actually thought it was very witty, Claire. It's hypocrisy that I can't stand." which seems extremely hypocritical given that he is saying that her comments are very witty whilst also being offended by them.

Nick has invented the concept of 'Free Movement of Vehicles' to make the middle classes see that opposing a motorway running through the castle on stilts is essentially backing Brexit.

    It's clever. Very clever.

I felt I had to challenge Cllr Cook on his double standards...

He tweeted John Major challenging the language being used in the Westminster Brexit shenanigans but has declined to do the same for Cllr McLellen's EEN column.

What!? None of this makes any sense - John Mclellan is a "wordsmith", the Taliban have women leaders and run public consultations, John Major is now considered some sort of elder statesman...

It's an alternate time-line. All we need to do is work out how to return to our real time-line and restore history to its natural flow.
