Any accountants floating around? I went to add a mileage expense in my accounting software and it threw an error saying that as I own the business I can't claim for mileage by bike.

I'm a photographer, and sole trader and was really looking forward to claiming last weeks 1100km ride to the south of France...totally legitimately work related and much more enjoyable than driving the same distance.

Yes you can - and you should also be able to claim for vehicle written down on books and replaced as a company vehicle - 3 years might be the accepted figure, although Royal Mail used 7 years for cycles specifically built for low maintenance & heavy loads.

Most serious leisure bike hire operators clear the fleets at 2 years max, as the failure rates approach the end of the flat part of the bath tub curve.

I suspect that asking this question here or via Spokes might elicit a response from an accountant or two already advising some of us on this topic.
