The architect firm behind the £16 billion expansion of Heathrow Airport is set to mastermind the long-term future of Edinburgh’s Waverley Station.

Edinburgh based consultants, Arup, will lead a group of highly experienced professionals in shaping a Masterplan for Scotland’s second busiest station, which welcomes 20 million passengers a year.

My understanding is that the current 'redevelopment' is essentially stage 1 of the master plan - all they're doing is adding more platforms. The next bit is about working out how you can fit even more, some of them going all the way though, without compromising access. The solution they've been thinking about for a while is a mezzanine floor above the platform level - sort of like the current overhead walkway but bigger.

They had an escalator taking you down from the walkway. This was closed when the platform was extended. However they have now constructed a parallel walkway to the walkway and put the escalator back in.
